Spartan volleyball wins home tourney (PHOTOS)

GRUNDY CENTER – Emerson Kracht and the Grundy Center volleyball team welcome the competition.
 
West Branch came out firing in the Spartans' opening match of their home tournament, the Lady Spartan Invite, and Grundy Center had to make some adjustments to rally back for a three-set victory, the first of three wins on the night for the top-ranked team in Class 2A.
 
The Spartans (8-0) defeated the Bears 19-21, 21-13, 15-11. Grundy Center then scored straight-set victories against AGWSR (21-8, 21-14) and Hudson (21-18, 21-16) to wrap the night with a perfect 3-0 record and the round-robin tournament victory.
 
Kracht finished with 21 kills, 21 assists and four blocks for the Spartans across all three matches. Kylie Willis added 14 kills and Brooke Flater and Hailey Wallis put down 11 each. Defensively, Kyah Luhring collected 23 digs and Sydney Matthews added 11 digs along with her team-leading 29 assists.
 
West Branch's front-row presence featured strong hitters like Abbey Fryauf and Lexi Klinkkammer while also providing a block that Grundy Center struggled to hit around early on.
 
"That was definitely a big wake-up call," Kracht said. "We knew we had to kick it in after that ... we had to find more energy in ourselves and I think we brought that back out the next two games."
