State bound! Comets bunt their way to upset win

Bunt and run. It has been a staple of David Lee’s BCLUW softball teams for many years, and on Monday it earned the Comets a state tournament berth.

The Comets celebrated a 5-3 victory over highly-ranked Cascade in the Class 2A Region 7 final on the Cougars’ home diamond.BCLUW, listed No. 13 in the final ratings, put pressure on second-ranked Cascade early and led from start to finish. The Comets ability to handle the stick in the batter’s box and with speed to burn on the base paths built an early 4-0 cushion. The Comets tallied two runs in the first inning followed by one each in the second and third.

“That was huge, absolutely huge,” stated Lee on two-run first inning. “And we didn’t quit there. We were relentless with trying to get somebody on base and getting them around. I think our execution tonight was good for the entire game.”

The Comets’ two run first came without a base hit, combining two base-on-balls with a fielder’s choice and sacrifice-fly. Olivia Callaway drew a game-opening walk after being down 0-2 and her courtesy runner Jenna Willett took second on Nicole Lutes’ sac-bunt. Samantha Ubben then coaxed a base-on-balls and both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Willett sprinted home and beat the tag on Jordyn Beeghly’s fielder’s choice bunt, and Ubben scored on Leah Yantis’ sacrifice-fly to center.
