Supervisors approve application for federal bridge replacement grant

Grundy County will pursue federal funds to replace a high-traffic bridge on Zaneta Road near the Pioneer Road (T65) intersection north of Reinbeck after a unanimous vote of support from the board of supervisors on Monday morning.

As County Engineer Gary Mauer explained, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recently approved a $225 million competitive highway bridge program in areas with population densities of less than 100 people per square mile, and so far, 77 bridges in Iowa have been submitted for potential replacement. Iowa leads the nation with 5,067 bridges considered structurally deficient or functionally obsolete.

“We’re thinking Iowa should fare pretty well in this program, but we won’t know until next spring,” Mauer said.
