Supervisors approve plan to rebuild Holland bridge

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy County Board of Supervisors have approved plans to rebuild a bridge in Holland.
During Monday’s regular meeting, County Engineer Gary Mauer said letting for the project will be held in January or February, 2014, with construction to begin later in the year. The estimated cost of the replacement is $350,000, 80 percent of which will come from federal funds, 10 percent from the city and 10 percent from the county. Mauer said the replacement will lead to a detour along Highway D-35.
Supervisors also approved Mauer’s request for a contract to have bridges inspected next year. The proposal from Calhoun-Burns & Associates is for $136.37 per bridge and will cover the county’s 223 bridges that are over 20 feet in length. Bridges under 20 feet were inspected this year. Bridges over 20 feet are required by law to be inspected every other year, though Mauer said there is no requirement for inspection of shorter bridges.
