Supervisors recommend approval of new hog site

After a brief discussion with zoning administrator Carie Sager and farmers Joe Dier and Heath Meyers, the Grundy County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to recommend the approval of two new 2,490-head Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) units during Monday morning’s regular meeting.
           
The application scored 465 points in the Master Matrix, well beyond the minimum requirement of 440, and the proposed site is located in section 31 of Washington Township south of Grundy Center near the Tama County line. Dier and Meyers, under the name Clearview Farms, LLC, plan to contract raise their hogs for Iowa Select, the state’s largest pork producer.
           
Katie Thornton-Lang and Michelle Van Deest of Grundy County Public Health presented a quarterly report to the board, and the transition from Unitypoint At Home to county management is now underway. Lang also reported that one Grundy County resident had contracted salmonella from the chicken salad that was traced back to Fareway grocery stores and Triple T Meats in Ackley (both have denied any wrongdoing), but he has since recovered.
