Those who gave all: Local author chronicles the stories of Reinbeck soldiers overseas

REINBECK - In an ongoing series about Reinbeck’s history, local author and historian Ray Rannfeldt’s third section of his “The Story of Reinbeck” series brings readers into the lives of two local soldiers who were killed and were buried overseas in World War I and World War II.
 
The third part of his book, titled “Two of Reinbeck Who Gave it All in the Great Wars,” follows two real-life young men from the Reinbeck area - Roland Roeder and Morris Haskin - one of whom fought in World War I and one of whom fought in World War II. Both died in the wars and were buried overseas.
 
Although there were many soldiers lost in foreign wars, Rannfeldt said he chose to write his book about local soldiers who were actually buried overseas.
 
“In Vietnam and Korea and other foreign wars, the soldiers’ bodies were taken home and buried, but in World War I and World War II, many of the soldiers were buried overseas,” he said. “I wanted to write about them because they are the ones that are sometimes forgotten; there is no grave to visit.”
