Truck accident causes damages at That Place Steakhouse

Heavy rains and strong winds caused a trucker to lose control of his vehicle on Highway 14 and swerve into the parking lot of That Place Steakhouse just west of Conrad on Wednesday morning at about 8:30 a.m.

Thomas Michael Shumate of Davenport was driving southbound on Highway 14, lost control of his truck and did a complete 180, flattening one of his tires in the process. Although Shumate, who is employed with Hawkeye Building Distributors Ltd., of Rock Island, Illinois, and was believed to be on his way to Marshalltown, did make contact with the west side of the building, the damages were not major, and the restaurant is expected to be reopened later today.

An initial estimate was not available, but Grundy County Chief Deputy Tim Wolthoff later told The Grundy Register that he believed the damages were between $10,000 and $15,000 because the chimney would need to be redone.

According to That Place co-owner Sandy Gibbs, the fireplace, roof and the men’s restroom, all along the western wall of the building, were pushed in and will require repairs, and a crew from Kopsa Construction of Beaman was already working on the roof less than an hour after the accident.

The Grundy County Sheriff’s Department, the Beaman and Conrad Fire Departments and Dave’s Crane and Wrecker of Union all assisted on the scene, and there were no injuries. Shumate was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.
