Two killed in Highway 14 crash

GRUNDY COUNTY - Two people have died as the result of a weather-related head-on collision on Highway 14 eight miles northwest of Conrad on Sunday afternoon.
 
According to a press release issued by the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, 21-year-old Justin Kime of Stewartville, Minnesota, and his passenger, 21-year-old Tristan Marlow of Council Bluffs, were heading northbound on Highway 14 just north of 260th Street at about 12:40 p.m. on Sunday. Kime, the driver, lost control of his vehicle on the snow covered road and crossed the center line, striking a freight liner truck tractor driven by 27-year-old Laurence Smith of St. Louis, Missouri.
 
Kime was transported to Grundy County Memorial Hospital where he later died, and Marlow was transported to Unity Point Marshalltown where he later died. Smith was not injured.
 
The accident remains under investigation by the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa DOT Enforcement. Agencies assisting included: B-Certs, Conrad Fire, Beaman Fire, Grundy Center ambulance and Unity Point Paramedics.
 
According to the National Weather Service, the area received about 7 inches of snow Saturday night into Sunday afternoon, which caused slick road conditions and hazardous travel.
