Welcome, Spartan Class of 2031!

GC Elementary welcomes newest students to Kindergarten
GRUNDY CENTER - Last Thursday marked the first day of school for students at the Grundy Center School District, including the 50 new faces who entered the Kindergarten class at GC Elementary.
Elementary Principal Brian Sammons says he’s excited about the school year to come, and that he and the staff are looking forward to another exciting year of fun, educational programs and initiatives.
“We’ve got a lot of initiatives we’re looking forward to throughout the year,” he said. “We’ve focused a lot on reading in the past, and we’re going to continue that with some different events, including our big author visit in October.”
Each year, the school hosts an author, who talks to students about books and reading in a fun, interactive format. This year’s featured author is Lauren Castillo, a Caldecott honor winning author and illustrator, who has helped produce over two dozen children’s books. In addition to the annual author visit, the school also hosts a pen pal each year - a speaker who comes to visit the students - as well as the Mock Caldecott Awards program held each winter in order to deepen students’ knowledge about books.
“We’ve also implemented a new Kid’s Club, where students split into groups and meet two times each month to discuss different topics,” Sammons said. “This year, we’re going to focus a lot on the Spartan’s Promise, which is similar to Character Counts because it teaches different positive characteristics and traits we want to instill in the kids.”
