Wellsburg waits for answers on fire truck repairs

After members of the Wellsburg Fire Department discovered an issue in the tank of a newly purchased fire truck on the first call they took it out on in late February, the city held a special meeting on March 16 and discussed the matter further at its regular meeting on Monday night while it waits for firm numbers on the cost of the repairs and who will pay for them.

“As far as the truck goes, I really have no new news,” Fire Chief Greg Winger told the council on Monday night. “I really don’t have a clear update for you, unfortunately.”

According to Winger, the tank had a “pinhole,” and the clear coat gel plastic liner either came apart or got water under it on the first trip out, which was a mutual assistance call from Holland. The total cost to replace the existing steel tank with a poly tank and repair the rear chute is estimated at $31,328, according to the minutes of the special meeting.
