A year stronger: Hames, Cougars take down Spartans

GRUNDY CENTER – Alex Hames knew teams would be coming for him this season.

The leading scorer for AGWSR boys basketball last season got most of his points from beyond the arc, but that wasn't going to cut it this winter, especially if Hames and the Cougars were going to advance their game to the next level.

Hames committed himself to the weight room heading into his senior season, and the result is a stronger, well-rounded senior leader that dropped in a game-high 22 points in AGWSR's 49-34 victory over Grundy Center on Friday night.

"Teams were going to make life difficult for him, and I've told him that as a junior and sophomore, he wasn't quite strong enough," AGWSR coach Russ Banzhaf said. "He's done a good job in the weight room, and now he can take it to the rim and finish, or get fouled and get to the free-throw line."
