Scherling tapped as new GCMH leader

An internal candidate with a plethora of prior experience inside of the Unitypoint umbrella has been chosen to succeed Jennifer Havens as the president of the Grundy County Memorial Hospital (GCMH), according to a press release issued Monday.

Adam Scherling currently serves as the Director of Operations-- Specialty Services at the Unitypoint Clinic in Waterloo, and he was the rural liaison between Allen Hospital and GCMH from 2014 to 2017.

“Adam has a thorough understanding of the operation of rural hospitals, and has worked with our board and administration on strategic planning and operations,” said board member Mary Schmidt. “He is well connected within the UnityPoint organization, which will serve our hospital well as we focus on aligning services within the health system.”

Scherling, a graduate of Linn-Mar High School and later the University of Iowa in both undergraduate and postgraduate programs (Health Science and Health Administration, respectively), will begin his new role on July 23. With a mother who was an OB nurse and a fiancé who works in health care in Waterloo, he’s always been surrounded by the industry. He had originally planned to work in nursing homes or post-acute care but quickly found himself craving something more fast-paced.

As he prepares for the new role, Scherling credits mentors like former GCMH CEO Pam Delagardelle (now the CEO of Allen Hospital), Unitypoint Fort Dodge President Tom Tibbitts and Buchanan County Health Center CEO Steve Slessor as some of the examples he seeks to emulate, and he got his first taste of GCMH as an intern attending early morning board meetings with Delagardelle.

Here in Grundy Center, he can’t wait to hit the ground running. At just 30 years old, Scherling is almost certainly one of the youngest leaders in GCMH history, but he hopes to bring a new energy and strategy to the position.
