GRUNDY CENTER - On Saturday afternoon, five student athletes from the Grundy Center School District took part in their first ever bowling competition for the Northeast Iowa Special Olympics, with students winning first, second and third place medals.

GC Special Olympics Coach and Instructor Sarah Dier says the students did extremely well in the competition, and two students will even advance on to the upcoming State Special Olympics competition.

“The team did amazing,” Dier said. “We worked together and cheered everyone on; not just our own team, but other teams.”

Dier says she and the team were so pleased with how much community support they had, with spectators driving out to Waterloo to cheer the team on.

“Our Grundy Center Special Olympics Bowling team had the largest group of spectators to cheer us on; we were so, so excited to see so many people there to support us,” she said. “The kids had an amazing time - they never stopped smiling and cheering each other on. The day GC students take on Special Olympics competition was filled with joy, excitement, love, happiness, tears of joy, and teamwork.”

Students  Jamie Hindman and Lacy Hulbert received first place ribbons in the bowling competition, which means they will advance to state on November 17 in Cedar Rapids, while students  Robbie Bischoff and Josie Van Nice received a second place ribbon. Student Emily Craig received a third place ribbon.
