GRUNDY CENTER – Tradition is in good hands with Dexter Whitehill and Ashton Martens.

The Grundy Center freshman golfers led the Spartans to a sectional team championship at Town and Country in Grundy Center last Friday, advancing to Friday's Class 1A district meet at Cedar Falls.

The defending state champions shot a 339, seven strokes better than AGWSR. The Cougars qualified for the district round as well, along with BCLUW, with the Comets finishing four strokes ahead of GMG for third place.

The district meet will be held at Pheasant Ridge in Cedar Falls, hosted by Grundy Center. The Spartans had the lowest score of the teams that qualified for the district meet, followed by Edgewood-Colesburg from the sectional at Clayton Ridge at 343 and then the Cougars at 346. Bishop Garrigan shot 349 at Nashua.

Whitehill and Martens each put 82s on their scorecards for the Spartans' team scoring, with Matthew Sternhagen adding an 86 and Tanner Appel and Andy Cox keeping the spread tight with 89s and Travis Kuester not far behind at 94.

"We've got great senior leaders that have shaped Ashton and me into good golfers," Whitehill said. "Our team's so deep that any of us can have a good night, so that's a lot of good encouragement."
