MARSHALLTOWN – Lori Willis needed the Grundy Center volleyball team to breathe.
The Spartan head coach asked for a timeout in the first set of a 2A regional semifinal match with Woodward-Granger on Thursday after the Hawks ran off five straight points for a 7-5 lead.
"We were wound tight," Willis said. "They were getting us out of system and I called a timeout just to breath, relax and unwind."
The breather worked wonders, as Grundy Center rebounded to finish the first set on a 20-5 streak, putting the Spartans on their way to a straight-set victory against Woodward-Granger at the Roundhouse in Marshalltown on Thursday, Oct. 31.
The sixth-ranked Grundy Center squad triumphed 25-12, 25-12, 25-22, advancing to the 2A Region 4 championship on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at Saydel High School against 11th-ranked Underwood with a 7 p.m. first serve. Grundy Center is 31-8 overall, while Underwood is 30-5.
