Girls basketball pairings released for 1A, 2A

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released postseason pairings for girls basketball in Class 1A, 2A, and 3A today.

Class 1A

AGWSR (10-9) hosts St. Edmond (0-18) in a first-round Region 3 matchup on Thursday, Feb. 10. Second-ranked Bishop Garrigan (16-3) is the top seed in Region 3.

In the area's only opening-round matchup between two local teams, BCLUW will head to Gladbrook-Reinbeck for a Region 5 first-round game on Thursday, Feb. 10. G-R (9-11) has won both meetings with the Comets (10-8) in the regular season. The winner takes on the top seed, third-ranked Springville (19-1).

Class 2A

Ranked area teams Dike-New Hartford, Grundy Center and Aplington-Parkersburg all received byes to the quarterfinals, which will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 15.

The top-ranked Wolverines (17-1) are in Region 3 as the only ranked team in their bracket. West Fork (16-3) is the No. 2 seed. South Hardin (5-14) is also in Region 3, hosting East Marshall (1-18) in a first-round matchup on Saturday, Feb. 12.

Grundy Center (17-2) is ranked ninth in 2A and is the No. 2 seed in Region 5 and would host through at least the semifinals. They are likely to run into 8th-ranked Jesup (16-3) if they make the regional final. Jesup won a regular-season meeting in Grundy Center on Jan. 4, 53-42.

A-P (14-4), ranked 12th in 2A, is the No. 2 seed in Region 4, and the bottom half of the bracket will likely run through Parkersburg. No. 2 Denver (17-2) is the top seed in Region 4 - the Cyclones beat A-P 46-28 on Jan. 21 and the teams are scheduled to meet again on Feb. 8.
