The age of the boycott

In these strange times, everything is a cultural litmus test.

I witnessed what I deemed “the epitome of 2018” on Friday night during a Waterloo Black Hawks game at Young Arena. The guy seated one row in front of me, who I’d pin at around the age of 50, spent the intermissions between periods—rather than heading up for another beverage and a hot dog, chucking a puck or admiring the fine Zamboni work being done on the ice—scrolling through his Facebook feed, locating every pro-or-anti-gun post he could find and replying with angry comments.

Supervisors approve sharing attorney services with Hardin County

In light of a recent departure and a serious illness in the Hardin County Attorney’s office, Grundy Center-based Heronimus, Schmidt, Allen, Schroeder and Geer will provide its services on an interim basis—mostly out of its Iowa Falls branch.

“I don’t anticipate that it will have any, at least de minimis, impact in Grundy County,” County Attorney Erika Allen said during Monday morning’s board of supervisors meeting. “It’s anticipated to be temporary.”

District 25 stays red: Sweeney fends off Democratic challenge in state senate special election

State Senator-elect Annette Sweeney faced the daunting task of mounting a special election campaign in just three weeks after the resignation of former Majority Leader Bill Dix, but she also held a pair of key advantages: built-in name recognition and an almost two-to-one ratio of registered Republicans to Democrats. The former state representative and USDA Director of Rural Development captured 62 percent of the votes cast in Grundy County on her way to a relatively easy win over Dike small businesswoman Tracy Freese, a first time candidate with no prior experience in elected office.

Rollover accident reported in northwest Grundy County

An Aplington woman was transported to Covenant Hospital in Waterloo after a one-vehicle rollover on T19 southwest of Aplington on Sunday evening.

According to a police report, 49-year-old Renee Grace left the Aplington Casey’s and lost control of her 2007 Ford Escape at about 8:35 p.m. on her way to work in Eldora due to snow and ice. A Casey’s employee headed in the same direction discovered her vehicle and alerted authorities, and the Aplington Fire Department was the first agency on the scene.

Butler-Grundy Development Alliance plans for dual-county housing needs assessment

GRUNDY COUNTY – Recently, the Butler-Grundy Development Alliance announced its plans to apply for a USDA-funded Rural Business Development grant, which would help the Alliance fund a much-needed Housing Needs Assessment survey across Grundy and Butler counties.

BGDA Executive Director Jeff Kolb says he and the board both feel the need for a housing assessment is extremely strong, as it has been about 20 years since the last housing assessment was done here.

Meet the candidates: Freese, Sweeney outline positions on key issues before special election

The expansive, mostly rural areas of Butler, Grundy, Hardin and Story Counties that comprise state senate district 25 will move into the spotlight next Tuesday as a special election to fill a seat vacated by former Majority Leader Bill Dix could set the tone for November and play a crucial role in determining the balance of power in Des Moines.
