Cougar girls, Spartan boys lead locals at NICL West track

GRUNDY CENTER – The AGWSR girls track and field team narrowly snatched the runner-up spot at the NICL West Championships in Grundy Center on Monday, May 7.
 
The Cougars scored 103 points to edge Grundy Center by two points for the second spot, trailing team champion West Marshall (155 points). BCLUW was fifth in the team standings with 59 points and Gladbrook-Reinbeck scored 24 team points.

DIKE – With the help of a new augmented reality sandbox the Dike-New Hartford Robotics Club is constructing, students will soon be able to use technology to explore geography, topography, weather and more in an immersive, virtual setting.

A day with Win: Author, illustrator wows students at GC elementary school

GRUNDY CENTER – Elementary Principal Brian Sammons says one goal the the staff and administration at the school have always strived for is to teach students to love reading; Sammons and his staff work hard to create dynamic and innovative literacy experiences for students, and create programs that get kids excited about books.
 
Some of the best experiences, he says, involve connecting students with mentors. Last Friday, that’s just what the school did, as they brought in San Francisco-based author and illustrator, LeUyen (Win) Pham to spend a day with the students.

Supervisors approve sharing attorney services with Hardin County

In light of a recent departure and a serious illness in the Hardin County Attorney’s office, Grundy Center-based Heronimus, Schmidt, Allen, Schroeder and Geer will provide its services on an interim basis—mostly out of its Iowa Falls branch.
           
“I don’t anticipate that it will have any, at least de minimis, impact in Grundy County,” County Attorney Erika Allen said during Monday morning’s board of supervisors meeting. “It’s anticipated to be temporary.”

Eventually, the weather's going to get decent enough where most of the student-athletes at area high schools can get into competition for the season.

Poppe shares struggles, successes during speech at G-R High School

REINBECK – Clarksville native and American Idol contestant Maddie Poppe took a break from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood last week to make an appearance at the Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School, where she gave an empowering speech to local elementary school students about overcoming obstacles and chasing success.
 
Poppe shared some personal highs and lows of her singing career with the youngsters, and encouraged them to always keep chasing their dreams, even if it seems impossible.
 

Butler-Grundy Development Alliance plans for dual-county housing needs assessment

GRUNDY COUNTY – Recently, the Butler-Grundy Development Alliance announced its plans to apply for a USDA-funded Rural Business Development grant, which would help the Alliance fund a much-needed Housing Needs Assessment survey across Grundy and Butler counties.
 
BGDA Executive Director Jeff Kolb says he and the board both feel the need for a housing assessment is extremely strong, as it has been about 20 years since the last housing assessment was done here.
 

Meet the candidates: Freese, Sweeney outline positions on key issues before special election
