Crazy about creches: Local couple showcases display of hundreds of nativity scenes from around the world

For Lyle and Marlene Neher, Christmas truly is the most wonderful time of the year.
           
But you won’t find any Santa figurines, or red-nosed reindeers, or Elves on the Shelves at the Neher residence in rural Grundy Center. Instead, you’ll find an impressive display of over 300 nativity scenes from around the world.
           
“I’ve got 360 sets, as well as other memorabilia like books and wall hangings, from over 100 countries and six continents,” says Marlene Neher, the chief nativity collector of the family.

Michael Blake Kruse doesn’t consider himself a connoisseur of Christmas cinema by any means, but there’s one exception that holds a special place in his heart.             “I’m a big fan of ‘A Christmas Story,’” the 2008 BCLUW High School graduate said of the 1983 ode to Ralphie Parker and his Red Ryder BB gun.

Wellsburg Public Library earns special designation

 In an era dominated by video streaming, smartphones, e-reading and Amazon, public libraries (along with newspapers) can often feel like an anachronism of sorts. But that doesn’t mean great things aren’t still happening there, and for the second straight year, the Wellsburg Public Library has received a national “star library” designation from Library Journal.

BCLUW board accepts early retirements from Moeller, Omvig

Two longtime instructors with over 40 years of combined service to BCLUW will accept early retirement packages at the end of the 2017-2018 school year.
           
Business Education teacher Jim Moeller (17 years) and Physical Education teacher Randy Omvig (24 years) plan to call it quits after lengthy tenures with the district, and the school board voted unanimously to approve the moves at Monday morning’s regular meeting.
           

Conrad council hears budget proposals from city departments

Members of the Conrad city council listened to budget proposals from spokespeople for several city departments, including fire, BCERTS, the Heritage Hall Museum and the park board, during Thursday night’s regular meeting.
           
Gary Stattler of the museum board told the council that the group needed more room to store items and was interested in a possible expansion. The Smithsonian’s Museum on Main will be coming to Conrad next winter, and Stattler noted that of the current board members, two are over 80 and one has cancer.
           

Supervisors narrowly reauthorize HIPAA compliance program

By a 3-2 vote, the Grundy County Board of Supervisors reauthorized an agreement with Carosh Compliance Solutions for trainings and software related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) during Monday morning’s regular meeting.
