Spartans narrowly miss district final

GRUNDY CENTER — A single bad inning kept the Grundy Center High School baseball team from playing in its first district final in several years.

Last Thursday Janesville scored six runs, three of which were unearned, as it rallied from a 6-1 deficit to edge the Spartans 7-6 in a Class 1A, District 5 semifinal at the George Wilhelm Sports Complex. 

The Spartans (7-17) reached the semifinal with a nail-biting 4-3 victory over Gladbrook-Reinbeck Tuesday.

Trailblazing: Rickert helps lead Pioneer Trail revival project

Former attorney and Reinbeck resident Mike Rickert has dedicated decades of his life to the Pioneer Trail in Grundy County. Back in 1985, Rickert was instrumental in leading the group that first got the trail started, and to this day, Rickert still walks the trail almost every morning. Now, 34 years after the trail was first started, Rickert is involved in an effort to finally get the trail completed, connecting the towns of Reinbeck, Morrison, Grundy Center and Holland.

Supervisors discuss roads, annex building projects

During one of its briefest meetings of the year, the Grundy County Board of Supervisors discussed road and annex building projects on Monday morning. County Engineer Gary Mauer briefly touched on road rocking and said that asphalt patching around the county should start by the end of the week. He added that work on the front stoop and sidewalk at the new annex building is expected to start within the next few weeks.

American Lutheran Church receives mental health advocate award

Recently, the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center received a mental health advocate award for their work in helping reduce the stigma on mental health, and raise awareness of and support for mental health topics in the congregation and community. The award is given each year during the Iowa Empowerment Conference to an organization that supports mental health. This year, the Lutheran Church was nominated for the award by Brian Heeren, an area local who is a former president of the Empowerment Conference, which is sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

James joins Grundy Register staff as marketing representative

Family comes first for Rhonda James, and it’s the reason she’s made her home in Grundy Center since 2010. “When it was time for me to change hats, I wanted to stay local. I wanted to stay in Grundy Center,” she said. D-NH student hopes to raise money for service dog

One local D-NH High School student, junior Tessa Smith, is on a mission to get herself a service dog, with a little help from friends, family, classmates and the community. At just 18-months old, Tessa was diagnosed with a rare disease called Ataxia-telangiectasia, or AT. AT is a progressive, degenerative disease that affects part of the brain that controls muscles and movement, leaving many who are diagnosed - including Tessa - in a wheelchair. The disease impacts a wide variety of muscle control, and progressively inhibits mobility, speech and other day to day functions.
