Culpepper and Merriweather Circus comes to town
GRUNDY CENTER – Last Friday morning, the Culpepper and Merriweather Circus rolled into town, setting up shop at the George Wilhelm Sports Complex. By that night, they had transformed the area into a lively spectacle complete with a big top tent, live jungle cats, and plenty of entertainment and fun for the whole family.

Wolverine football looks to prove doubters wrong

   DIKE – Don Betts expects to see a lot of wide eyes at the line of scrimmage.
   The Dike-New Hartford football head coach will be sending in young Wolverines feet first into the varsity game as a small-but-motivated senior class looks to set the course for a third-consecutive trip to the state semifinals at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.
   "These guys are going to have to understand what it takes to play in varsity quickly," Betts said. "That's the challenge, but we've met that challenge every year."

Supervisors receive bids for bridge repair project

The Grundy County Board of Supervisors opened a pair of sealed bids from two local contractors for a bridge repair in a rural area of the county around 150th Street and J Avenue at Monday morning’s regular meeting.
           
PCI of Reinbeck submitted the low bid at $79,932.50, and Boulder Contracting of Grundy Center submitted a bid of $119,600 for the project, which County Engineer Gary Mauer had originally estimated at $124,400. The repairs will include replacing wood piling with steel, and the bridge has been closed since May 1.
           

Board elections upcoming at local districts

The period to file paperwork for school board candidacy is officially underway in Iowa as of July 10, and several seats will be up for grabs at each of the five Grundy County districts. A list of the candidates up for re-election is below, and not all of them have announced whether or not they will run for another term.

            In the AGWSR district, a total of three members are up for re-election in 2017: Board President Brian Johnson of district two, Pat Ubben of district one and Anthony Sillman of district 11.

Motorcyclist injured in Highway 20 accident

A motorcyclist headed for the Sturgis Festival in South Dakota suffered a serious injury but was eventually released after losing control on Highway 20 at the Dike exit on Friday.
           
Yair Gavrielov, age 51, of Glenview, Illinois, was driving a 2013 Honda motorcycle westbound when he dropped off the inside shoulder, tried to bring himself back onto the road and lost control. Gavrielov was ejected from the vehicle after it rolled several times, and he was taken to Covenant Hospital in Waterloo.
