On September 11 of 2001, 343 New York City firefighters made the ultimate sacrifice, in hopes that others might live.
In an effort to honor and remember the men and women who selflessly gave their lives that day, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation organizes a yearly 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and fundraiser. Each participant of the climb pays a personal tribute to a FDNY firefighter by climbing or walking the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center, symbolically completing their heroic journey to save others.

Supervisors strike down ordinance that would ban future wind energy projects

Another recommendation from the planning and zoning commission, another public hearing and another faceoff between opposing sides in the debate over wind energy conversion in Grundy County. On Tuesday morning, the board of supervisors struck down a proposed ordinance change that would have effectively banned any future large-scale wind energy projects in the county after an hour-long hearing that was moved to a courtroom to accommodate a crowd of approximately 30 patrons.
           

BCLUW enters first year of TLC

The Teacher Leadership and Compensation grant, now in its third year of existence, provides additional funding to school districts for instructional coaching and new technology in the classroom, and this year, small schools around the area including BCLUW are implementing the change. Superintendent Ben Petty, full-time instructional coach Stacy Simpson and technology instruction coach Karen Hammers spoke to The Grundy Register about the program, the changes it will bring and how it can help them to provide better educational opportunities for students.

GRUNDY COUNTY – Local historian Lois Stork is heading a project that seeks to preserve local history by identifying and marking historical landmarks throughout the county, and she is looking to the public for help with this.

Fifth annual Taste of Grundy Center proves to be a hit

GRUNDY CENTER – This year, local businesses and community members came together to celebrate the fifth annual Taste of Grundy Center, which yielded the largest turnout in the event’s history.
Twenty different area vendors set up booths around the Grundy County courthouse lawn to offer visitors a sampling of delicious treats, from pinwheels to pudding and craft beer to cookies, there was something for everyone. The treats ranged from small (dainty miniature cupcakes) to large (the biggest soft pretzel Grundy Center has ever seen), and everything in between.

Local student learns about leadership at Girls State

Politics have been all over the news in 2016, and one local high school student has made her own foray into the fray with her election as lieutenant governor—of the fictional state of Hawkeye. During her weeklong trip to the annual Girls State convention in Des Moines, BCLUW senior Summer Kramer learned all about the workings of government and got a firsthand taste of running a campaign.
           

Kuhls receive century farm recognition at state fair

Louis and Emilia Kuhl first moved from a home between Garwin and Gladbrook to purchase a farm north of Beaman in 1914, and over 100 years and four generations later, the land remains in the family. The Kuhls recently received Century Farm recognition during the state fair in Des Moines last week.
