With liberty and justice for all: Local preschooler leads Pledge of Allegiance at Iowa Statehouse

JR and Michelle Kennedy couldn’t believe how quickly their four-year-old daughter Reese had memorized the Pledge of Allegiance at preschool, so the Wellsburg couple did what any good 21st century parents would do: they took a video and uploaded it to Facebook.
 
It caught the attention of none other than Annette Sweeney, a longtime Kennedy family friend and current state Senator representing Iowa’s 25th district. She invited Reese to come to the Statehouse and lead the legislature in the pledge on Monday, February 11.
           

Adame pleads not guilty, trial set for April

The man who stands accused of killing Michael Johns and leaving his body in a ditch in 2017 has formally pled not guilty to First Degree Murder charges, and his trial is tentatively set to begin on April 30.
           
Twenty-seven year old Armando Adame III of Waterloo accepted a written arraignment on Monday but did not physically appear in the Floyd County courtroom, consulting with his public defenders, Nellie O’Mara and Parker Thirnbeck of Mason City, for several hours. Judge Colleen Weiland has been appointed to preside over the case.

With all of the turmoil, anger and insanity that we face on a daily basis as citizens of the world, it’s comforting to know that we can put our differences aside and come together to enjoy the spectacle of fabulously wealthy, vainglorious celebrities sniffing each other’s flatulence for three hours and grandstanding on the issues of the moment while tangibly doing nothing to change the circumstances for the rest of us. 
 

Conrad property taxes set to drop, but water rates likely to increase

As the city of Conrad prepares to certify its budget for the upcoming fiscal year, City Clerk Lori Stansberry brought the council up to speed on several financial issues during Thursday night’s regular meeting.
           
According to Stansberry, one change that seems inevitable at this point is an increase in water/sewer rates as the city attempts to secure a revolving loan through the state on the sanitary sewer.
           
“In water and sewer, we’re underfunded,” she said.
           

Supervisors consider voting changes, five-year road plan

The Grundy County Board of Supervisors discussed a proposed change in absentee ballot voting due to a hotly contested State House race and the five-year road construction plan during Tuesday morning’s regular meeting.
           

Operation Threshold receives new cooler donation

GRUNDY CENTER - Recently, Operation Threshold in Grundy Center received a new cooler - which was donated by the Northeast Iowa Food Bank - for distributing fresh produce and milk to local food pantry customers.
 
Jodi Rowe, Grundy County Operation Threshold Director, says the new cooler will help the organization expand their offerings to help provide local families in need with fresh, wholesome food products.
 

Battle of the Bots: GC Robotics team first in school history to head to State

GRUNDY CENTER - For the first time in school history, a team of students in the Grundy Center Robotics Club are headed to the state competition, where they will compete against 47 other teams from across Iowa in a battle of the bots.
 
The “Killer Ducks” are one of three teams in the Grundy Center Robotics Club, and self-described “rookies” that managed to start with nothing and make their way to the top of the high school robotics game.

DES MOINES – The wrestlers at Wells Fargo Arena for the Iowa High School State Tournament are there because they're survivors of a two-week filtering process, generally agreed to be the best of the best.

That process is more fine-tuned. The win-loss records go out the window. Any match can come down to a single point, a single moment, a single technique. Every match matters and can mean the difference between a spot on the medal stand or going home on the first day of the tournament.

Throughout the 2018-2019 season, a pair of painful losses have been etched in the minds of the seniors who anchor the Grundy Center basketball team—one against Cascade last March in the Class 2A State Championship game, and another at the hands of an upstart Wilton squad in a regional final volleyball match last fall. Headed into Monday night’s clash with Sumner-Fredericksburg, the top-ranked Spartans were determined to avoid a premature exit in consecutive sports.
