Marlys Van Hauen

Marlys Ann (Struck) Van Hauen, 81, of Urbandale passed away on February 24, 2019, at Mercy Hospice, Johnston. A memorial gathering will be held Thursday, April 18 from 4-7 PM at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory, 8201 Hickman Rd. Urbandale.  

Bob Bouman

Celebration of Life for Bob Bouman, 71 of Tripoli, formerly of Dike, will be held on March 30. The service will begin at 1:00pm at the Tripoli Welcome Center, 100 North Main, Tripoli.

Mary Jane Luethje

Mary Jane Luethje, 87, of Gladbrook passed away March 13, 2019, at Westbrook Acres in Gladbrook. Funeral Services were March 18 at the Peace United Church of Christ in Gladbrook. Interment was in Oakland Cemetery in Beaman. 

Suspect charged with attempted burglary of Reinbeck bar

A 28-year-old Reinbeck man has been arrested and charged with attempting to rob the 405 Lounge last Monday.
           
According to court records, Austin Ditty, who had worked at the establishment, admitted to county law enforcement officials that he used a pre-paid Visa card twice to gain entry into the locked bar and steal food and liquor. Surveillance video identified him as a suspect, and 405 owner Jack Brandt, who stayed at the bar after it closed, apprehended Ditty.
           

BCLUW board approves staff master contract

The BCLUW board of education approved its staff master contract with a 1.5 percent raise in base pay for certified staff, support staff and administration and set a preliminary calendar for the 2019-2020 school year during its regular meeting on Monday evening.
           
According to Superintendent Ben Petty, none of the teachers will get a raise of less than $650 in annual salary, and while he acknowledged that the 1.5 percent figure sounded low, he added that it’s a product of the current environment in Iowa. 
           

Conrad council passes FY2020 budget

During a brief regular meeting last Thursday night, the Conrad city council passed its fiscal year 2020 budget as presented and authorized a transfer into the capital fund.
           
The budget includes a total of $3,101,465 in revenues and $3,101,335 in expenditures and transfers out, and the levy rate is $11.05 per $1,000 of valuation on regular property. The levy rate on agricultural land within city limits was set at $3.00 per $1,000 of valuation.

Duane A. Schipper

Duane A. “Dewey” Schipper, 75, of Dike passed away peacefully as the result of a stroke, on March 17, 2019, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City. Visitation for Dewey will be held on Wednesday, March 20th from 4 until 7 PM at the Dike United Methodist Church. 

Mabel Lucille Nederhoff

Mabel Lucille Nederhoff, 99, of Wellsburg passed away on March 16, 2019, at Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls while under the care of Compassus Hospice. A funeral service was held on March 19 at Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg with Pastor Mike Brost officiating.
 

Gutknecht new Spartan girls golf coach

Heather Gutknecht is ready to help the Grundy Center girls golf team achieve its goals this spring.
 
A volunteer assistant coach for the last two seasons, Gutknecht has stepped into the head coaching role for the Spartans in place of Jocilyn Onnen.
 
"We have really great girls that are lifelong learners of the game," Gutknecht said. "I fell in love with coaching and working with these girls when I started helping out with the team and when the opportunity arose, I applied for it and was really excited to get it."
 

Marvin Janssen

Marvin Henry Janssen, 87, of Wellsburg passed away on March 9, 2019, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13 at the Abels Funeral and Cremation Service, Doyen Chapel, in Wellsburg. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 14 at the Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in rural Ackley.
