Rebel baseball falls to Hudson in district final

TRAER – During a postseason run where defense was king, the Gladbrook-Reinbeck baseball team met its match in a Class 1A district final last Saturday night.
Hudson was just as sharp defensively and had the right mixture of big hits and sound fundamentals to take advantage of a brief lapse in the Rebels' otherwise-sterling defense, pouncing on the opening in a 3-2 victory for the Pirates and ending G-R's season at 15-9.

Grundy, Iowa Falls law firms announce expansion

GRUNDY CENTER – Last week, the Heronimus, Schmidt, Allen, Schroeder & Geer law firm announced that an Iowa Falls-based practice – Barker, McNeal, Wiese & Holt – will be joining their firm.
Todd Geer, a partner with Heronimus et al., said their firm was contacted about the possibility last year by Michael Holt, who is a partner with Barker et al.

Fair board plans infrastructure improvements, upgrades

GRUNDY CENTER – Even with several days still left of this year’s Grundy County Fair Week, fair board members are already busy planning future improvements and upgrades at the fairgrounds – including one project they hope to start as early as this year.
“We’ve spent the last 10 years or so trying to make improvements out here to get more community involvement,” said fair board president Kyle Dudden. “We’ve had a lot of long-range, optimistic brain-storming for what we’d like to see in the future, and we’d like to go forward with some of these ideas.”

A chip off the old block

Kellie and I aren’t big conspiracy theorists, but we both agreed that something was a bit fishy when we received almost identical letters from our respective financial institutions (I still use my hometown bank for checking) informing of a “possible breach” and providing us each with a new chip card to lessen the chances of any future fraud.

Supervisors approve fireworks ordinance

Consumer fireworks will be banned at all county parks, wildlife areas and preserves unless a special exception is made after the Grundy County Board of Supervisors voted to adopt a new ordinance that has been updated to reflect changes in state law on Monday morning.

Fun in the sun: Cooler temps don’t put a damper on swimming season

GRUNDY COUNTY – Since the beginning of this year’s swimming season, the weather has proved to be an unpredictable factor for local aquatic centers. Temperatures swung from unseasonably hot to unseasonably chilly in a matter of days, but local swimmers have proved to be resilient, showing out to swim despite the less-than-perfect conditions.
In Grundy Center, pool manager Heather Stumberg says attendance has been very good so far this year, despite chillier temperatures the last week or so.

G-R's Tscherter stifles BCLUW bats in victory

REINBECK – Tyler Tscherter doesn’t let the opposition intimidate him.
The freshman on Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s baseball team has held his own on the mound and threw a gem against BCLUW last Monday in a 6-2 victory for the Rebels in Reinbeck.
Tscherter allowed no hits in five and two-third shutout innings, striking out nine with two walks. It was his second consecutive start with no hits allowed after a five-inning stint against South Hardin on June 21.
