The Dike-New Hartford volleyball team wrapped up its fourth consecutive Class 2A state volleyball championship Friday with a four-set victory over third-ranked Western Christian.

Set scores were 25-21, 25-23, 17-25 and 25-23.

Senior setter Rachel Koop was named captain of the Class 2A All-Tournament team while fellow seniors Briana Weber and Lizzy Blough were also on the all-tourney squad. Koop ranked second in the tournament with 104 assists and ninth with 19 kills. Weber led the tourney in kills and digs while Blough ranked fifth in the tournament with 30 kills.

The Grundy Register and Conrad Record will explore the future of the five school districts serving Grundy County and the biggest challenges facing them in a three-part series. Last week’s first part explored enrollment trends and begins to look at the economic angle of small schools. This week’s second part will further explore budget issues plaguing four of the five districts, which are facing declining enrollment, while beginning to explore tough decisions that must be made this year and beyond.

Veterans recognized at annual GCHS ceremony

    GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center veterans received special recognition Tuesday as the Grundy Center National Honor Society hosted the school’s annual Veteran’s Day ceremony.
   Speakers for the day included Marine reservists Connor Hamilton and Jacob Harberts and Army reservist Garrett Nibbelink.
   Hamilton spoke of the men and women who had served before them and how they set the bar high for those who followed them.

Mom of the Year? GCFL team mom hopes so

GRUNDY CENTER — Somer Muller grew up watching football. She watched the Hawkeyes with her grandfather as she grew up, became an avid Green Bay Packers fan and met her husband as he played football at Upper Iowa University.
Now her role is much different … and much more important … as a team mom for the Grundy Center Football League team coached by her husband, Scott, and that her son, Kolby, plays on.

Entertainment announced for 2014 Festival of Trees

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center Festival of Trees Committee has announced entertainment for the annual festival, which will be held Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 15-16) at the Old 56 Dairy just west of Grundy Center on Highway 14/175.
The theme for this year’s festival is “Christmas in the Country. Public viewing of trees will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
