Wolverine girls return to state meet

PELLA — One year ago the Dike-New Hartford cross country program failed to qualify at least one team for the state meet for the first time in five years. It did not take the Wolverines nearly as long to start a new streak.

Lippert, Boomsma qualify for State Cross Country

MANCHESTER – Bethany Lippert and Landon Boomsma rose to the occasion at the Class 3A State Qualifying Cross Country Meet in Manchester Thursday. Both placed among the top 10 individuals to earn a spot at the state meet to be held at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge on Saturday, Nov. 1.
After a strong sophomore season, Lippert came into the meet with a personal best time of 15.53. On Thursday she shaved 29 seconds off her best time to set a new personal best mark of 15:24 and finish ninth in a competitive field of highly ranked runners.

 

Flater reaches milestone as Spartans win finale

TRAER — Bryce Flater rushed for 179 yards and four touchdowns and Brock Rohler threw for a season-high 148 yards as Grundy Center went on a winner Friday, 39-6 over North Tama.
    The Spartans, winners of two of their last four games, finish 2-7 overall and 2-4 in Class A, District 4. They controlled the game from opening kickoff to final horn, not allowing North Tama to score until the game’s final minute.
    Spartan coach Brent Thoren said he was extremely pleased to see how well his team played.

Rebels serve 16 aces, dominate regional opener

GARWIN — Hayley Weber finished with eight kills and three service aces last Tuesday as Gladbrook-Reinbeck opened Class 1A, Region 6 postseason play with a 25-7, 25-15, 25-10 sweep over GMG.
The Rebels (17-18) advanced to the quarterfinal round of regionals, where they faced Don Bosco Tuesday in Garwin. GMG finishes with a 4-15 record.
The Rebels never trailed in any of the three games while improving to 4-4 in road matches this season.

Rebels claim second straight district title

FAIRBANK – Gladbrook-Reinbeck claimed their second straight district title with a 49-6 win over Wapsie Valley Friday night. The Rebels were strong on both sides of the ball, accumulating 510 yards of total offense and while holding the Warriors to just 115.
“Our kids played with a ton of effort and it was a lot of fun to coach them,” Gladbrook-Reinbeck head coach John Olson said. “We had some big plays and we looked very sharp. Our kids were definitely motivated to win a back-to-back district title.”

Cougar netters advance to second round

ACKLEY – The AGWSR volleyball team breezed through the first round of the Class 1A Region 4 postseason bracket with a win in straight sets over Valley Lutheran last Tuesday, 25-4, 25-9, 25-12. AGWSR coach Betsy Harms attributed the win to a balanced offensive attack and solid serving by the Cougars.
“We had a well-rounded night,” Harms said. “We had all seven hitters with 3+ kills. Our servers were on queue with 13 aces.”

Johnson’s five scores lift D-NH

DIKE — Trent Johnson rushed for 297 yards and five touchdowns, lifting Dike-New Hartford to a 49-20 victory over Jesup in its regular-season finale.
    The Wolverines (7-2 overall) finish 5-1 in Class 1A, District 4 and will host Bellevue in a first-round playoff game Wednesday.

AGWSR downs West Fork 56-13

ACKLEY – The AGWSR football team closed out a strong regular season with a decisive 56-13 win over West Fork Friday night, bringing their 2014 record to 8-1 overall, 5-1 in District A-4 for a second place finish in the district. The Cougars were slated to host a first round Class A playoff game with Bishop Garrigan, Algona (6-3 overall, 4-2 District A-3) on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 7:00 p.m.

Kenneth Howard Schelling, 90, of Marshalltown passed away October 28, 2014, at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown. Funeral services for Kenny were  November 1 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Visitation was held October 31 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Arvilla L. Miller Smith

Arvilla L. Miller Smith of Upland, CA., formerly of Grundy Center, graduated in 1943 was born on May 6, 1925.  She passed on Ocboter 5, 2014.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, October 25, at the Rose Hill Cemetary.
She worked for Lanternman State Hospital in Pamona for 25 years.
