D-NH student hopes to raise money for service dog

DIKE-NEW HARTFORD - One local D-NH High School student, junior Tessa Smith, is on a mission to get herself a service dog, with a little help from friends, family, classmates and the community.
 
At just 18-months old, Tessa was diagnosed with a rare disease called Ataxia-telangiectasia, or AT. AT is a progressive, degenerative disease that affects part of the brain that controls muscles and movement, leaving many who are diagnosed - including Tessa - in a wheelchair.
 

James joins Grundy Register staff as marketing representative

Family comes first for Rhonda James, and it’s the reason she’s made her home in Grundy Center since 2010.
           
“When it was time for me to change hats, I wanted to stay local. I wanted to stay in Grundy Center,” she said.
           

Trailblazing: Rickert helps lead Pioneer Trail revival project

GRUNDY COUNTY - Former attorney and Reinbeck resident Mike Rickert has dedicated decades of his life to the Pioneer Trail in Grundy County.
 
Back in 1985, Rickert was instrumental in leading the group that first got the trail started, and to this day, Rickert still walks the trail almost every morning. Now, 34 years after the trail was first started, Rickert is involved in an effort to finally get the trail completed, connecting the towns of Reinbeck, Morrison, Grundy Center and Holland.
 

Supervisors discuss roads, annex building projects

During one of its briefest meetings of the year, the Grundy County Board of Supervisors discussed road and annex building projects on Monday morning.
           
County Engineer Gary Mauer briefly touched on road rocking and said that asphalt patching around the county should start by the end of the week. He added that work on the front stoop and sidewalk at the new annex building is expected to start within the next few weeks.

D-NH launches brand new mobile app

Dike-New Hartford Superintendent Justin Stockdale always wants to be on the cutting edge, and during his tenure, he hasn’t been afraid to try new things.
           
So last year, he reached out to the Donovan Group, the district’s PR and Marketing firm out of Milwaukee, about creating a comprehensive mobile app that would provide updates on all things Dike-New Hartford, from school delays and closures to Wolverine scores. Last week, it officially launched.
           

Competition fuels GC/G-R cross country (PHOTOS)

MARSHALLTOWN – Whether it’s the runners from the bigger schools or a teammate, Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck cross country was driven to compete at Thursday’s Marshalltown Early Bird race.
  
The GC/G-R boys were fifth out of eight teams and the girls placed seventh at the course on the campus of Marshalltown Community College.
  
Sam Schildroth was the top finisher for the boys, finishing in 14th place in 18:26, a few seconds ahead of teammate Kenny Day, 17th in a time of 18:30.
  

Grundy Center football steady in Week 1 win

BELLE PLAINE – An early advantage for the Grundy Center football team carried the Spartans to a 29-12 victory at Belle Plaine to open the season.
 
Grundy Center starts the season 1-0, the first win for new head coach Travis Zajac. Belle Plaine fell to 1-1.
  

Turkey Valley smashes AGWSR football (photos)

ACKLEY – When Turkey Valley recovered a standard kickoff at the end of the third quarter at AGWSR High School last Friday night, it summed up a rough night for the Cougars.
 
AGWSR head coach James Koop opted for the word “befuddling” to describe Turkey Valley’s 56-6 romp on Friday night.
 

Grundy Center volleyball wins home round robin

GRUNDY CENTER – Abby Hamann and the Grundy Center volleyball team have been trying to exert maximum effort in practice.
  
The Spartans entered the season as the 12th-ranked team in Class 2A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, but hard work is already paying off.
  
Grundy Center handled No. 4 Hudson in a straight-set victory for the finale of the Spartan Volleyball Invite at Grundy Center High School last Tuesday.
