State Fair 2019: Grundy Center FFA trio wins herdsmanship award

Ella Hommel, Lauren Mosher and Leah Mosher of the Grundy Center FFA organization left the Iowa State Fair with some impressive hardware last week, winning both individual honors and a group herdsmanship award at the Beef Show.
           

Supervisors abandon proposed road rock policy

After receiving a steady stream of backlash in the form of phone calls, e-mails and Facebook comments, the board of supervisors unanimously rejected a previously discussed voluntary policy that would allow landowners to share costs for rock on gravel roads with the county during Monday morning’s regular meeting.
           

Wellsburg residents launch petition to expel Alliant Energy

Citing exorbitant prices and an alleged lack of involvement in the community, a group of Wellsburg residents has launched a Change.org petition asking for the removal of Alliant Energy as the town’s gas and electric provider and requesting the services of a new company that “cares and wants to see us grow.”
           

County removes five courthouse trees, not six

After meeting and consulting with a forester from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources last Wednesday, the Grundy County Board of Supervisors opted to revise its original plan and remove five trees from the courthouse square instead of six.
           
Forester Joe Herring examined the courthouse trees with the board, although Grundy Center Supervisor Barb Smith had to leave to return to work before the final vote was cast. Grundy Center Chamber-Main Street Director Lisa Bienfang also attended.

Within the turbocharged whirlwind that is the modern media cycle, the brief fascination with a sparsely attended Steve King rally in Grundy Center already feels long forgotten a week and a half later. But for the lone constituent in the audience, 21-year-old Jessica Birch of Dike, the simple act of showing up catapulted her to an appearance on CNN and a brief brush with viral fame.
           

Some useless predictions for football season

Summer is finally over, and even if football is going the way of rock n’ roll, DVDs and the Kodak camera, I’m going to keep watching it until the end. It’s pigskin season, the best season, the only sports season that I truly love and the only season where the weather doesn’t stink in Iowa. Because I’m mostly off of the high school beat by now, I’ll leave those predictions to Jake, but here are some useless college and NFL takes that you can use to call me an idiot when the season’s over. Happy football!

D-NH to start girls soccer program in 2020

Dike-New Hartford has hired Kat Bering and Colleen Ridings as co-head coaches to lead the inaugural season of the girls soccer program, set to begin in March 2020.
 
Kat Bering is a former head coach for the University of Northern Iowa's women's soccer team, while Ridings is the current men's soccer coach at Hawkeye Community College and is an assistant on the RedTails' women's team.
 

Draude ends 10 years at KQCR/KLMJ

After a decade of broadcasting at the local radio station, Austin Draude found out that he didn't have to live in a specific place to call it home.
  
Draude announced at the end of the 2018-19 athletic calendar that he would be leaving KQCR/KLMJ after serving as a broadcaster with the station for almost 10 years.
  
He accepted a position as the Media Director for the North Iowa Bulls, a member of the North American Tier III Hockey League that plays at Mason City's North Iowa Ice Arena.
  

Johanna Schmitt

Johanna Schmitt, 95, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Dike, passed away on August 15, 2019, at Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls. A visitation was held August 19 at Dike-Chapel in Dike. A funeral service was held August 20 at Pleasant Valley Reformed Church in rural Holland (Fern) with Pastor Rick Vollema officiating. Interment was held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center.
