Grassley, Sweeney hold listening posts in Grundy Center and Dike

Talk of healthcare dominated the discussion during State Representative Pat Grassley and State Senator Annette Sweeney’s listening posts held in Grundy Center and Dike on Friday.
 
Local healthcare representatives showed out to both meetings to thank the legislators for their support of rural, critical access care hospitals like the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center.
 

Smith honored as Main Street Hero

Though he may be gone, longtime Grundy Center resident Richard Smith’s legacy lives on through the countless contributions to community development he and his wife Barb have made throughout Grundy Center.
 
During the Main Street Iowa awards ceremony held in Des Moines on Friday, Richard’s work was recognized when he was honored as a Main Street Hero; an award from Main Street Iowa that recognizes an individual posthumously for having been an outstanding volunteer and visionary for community development.
 

Seven hospitalized after accident in Grundy County

Seven people were taken to the hospital after a single-vehicle accident on Highway 20 near Wellsburg on Saturday afternoon.
 
According to the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, 20-year-old Raymond Abwe was heading west on Highway 20 about three miles northwest of Wellsburg around 3 p.m. on Saturday when he lost control of his vehicle on the slush-covered road.
 
The vehicle entered the median, rolled, spun around and came to a rest on the eastbound inside shoulder.

The big break: Catching up with Beaman native and "Criminal Minds" actor Michael Blake Kruse

When 2008 BCLUW graduate Michael Blake Kruse moved west to pursue an acting career in 2012, an acquaintance told him that he’d probably have to put in five to 10 years before landing a major part. As it turned out, her prediction was right on the money.             Kruse, who’s starred in national ad campaigns with companies like Skechers and McDonald’s and acted in a Hallmark Christmas movie, has finally scored a dream role on one of the most popular television shows of the 21st century.

Margaret Ohrt

Margaret Lucile Ohrt, 91, of Reinbeck, passed away on March 9, 2019, at Parkview Manor in Reinbeck. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 13, from 5-7 PM at French-Hand Chapel in Reinbeck. A Funeral Service will follow on Thursday, March 14, at 10:30 AM at Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Reinbeck with Reverend Joel Love officiating. 

Joan Peters

Joan Peters, 77, of Conrad, IA, passed away Friday, March 8, 2019, at her residence. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at the First Presbyterian Church in Conrad. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m., until the time of the services, Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at the First Presbyterian Church in Conrad. 

Clint Miller

Clint Miller, 61, of Gladbrook, IA, passed away Friday, March 8, 2019. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 14, 2019, at Peace United Church of Christ in Gladbrook. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m., until the time of the services, at the church. 

Erna Toomsen

Erna Toomsen passed away at the age of 82 on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Berdene and her brother, Bernerd and her grandson, Julian.

In the eye of the storm: NWS meteorologist presents weather-spotting seminar in Morrison

Jim Lee has been a weather nerd for as long as he can remember, and he loved it so much that he’s worked for the National Weather Service (NWS) since he graduated from college. Lee, a meteorologist based out of Des Moines, spoke to a group of area residents about the keys to storm spotting during a free presentation at the Grundy County Conservation headquarters in Morrison last Wednesday night.
