Fog-induced Highway 14 accident leaves four injured

A father and son from Eldora and an Altoona couple were transported to the Grundy County Memorial Hospital on Sunday morning after a two-vehicle accident approximately eight miles northwest of Conrad on Highway 14.

Kolthoff champion at NICL tourney

PARKERSBURG – Taylor Kolthoff wanted to be No. 1 this time around.
  
The South Hardin-BCLUW junior did that on Saturday with style, winning the 120-pound title at the North Iowa Cedar League tournament in Parkersburg, and picking up his 100th-career victory along the way.
  
Kolthoff pinned West Marshall's Jacob Vawter in 2:25 in the quarterfinal and held off AGWSR's Trey Lashbrook by a 3-2 decision in an intense semifinal match for Kolthoff's 100th career victory.
  

Spartan boys trending upward

ACKLEY - Two teams heading in opposite directions battled here Friday and the recent trends remained intact.
  
A red-hot Grundy Center club defeated the AGWSR boys’ basketball team, 66-56 during a key North Iowa Cedar League West Conference contest.
  
The Cougars lost the conference lead, slipping to 7-3 and are 9-7 overall, going 2-7 over the last nine games after a 7-0 start to the season.
  

Spartan girls clinch NICL West

GRUNDY CENTER – The Grundy Center girls basketball team clinched an NICL West title for the fourth consecutive season in a 63-27 victory over West Marshall on Saturday.
 
The Spartans are 16-0 overall and 11-0 in the NICL West. The Trojans entered Saturday's matchup one game behind the Spartans in the standings.
 
Hailey Wallis scored 19 points to pace the Spartan attack, adding five rebounds, five steals and three assists. Kylie Willis and Brooke Flater scored 10 points each. Willis had five rebounds and Flater contributed four rebounds and three steals.
 

Big time: Spartan post players strong versus AGWSR

ACKLEY –The one-two punch of Grundy Center post players Kylie Willis and Brooke Flater combined for 36 points as the No. 1 in Class 2A Spartan girls continued their perfect marks with a 64-46 win over the AGWSR girls’ basketball team here Friday during North Iowa Cedar League West Conference play.
  
The Spartans climbed to 15-0 overall and a league-leading 10-0 with the sweep of the ninth-ranked in Class 1A Cougars. Grundy Center won the first meeting 49-34 back in mid-December.
  

Sandra J. "Sandy" Seemann

Sandra J. “Sandy” Seemann, 80, of Waterloo, died January 20, 2019, at Covenant Medical Center. Services were Monday, January 28, 2019, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church and inurnment wil be in Garden of Memories cemetery at a later date.
 

Charles "Charlie" Riek

Charles “Charlie” Edward Riek, 91, of Coralville, formerly of Grundy Center, passed away January 22, 2019, at Lantern Park Specialty Care in Coralville. Visitation was held January 29th at Abels Funeral & Cremation Service-Engelkes Chapel in Grundy Center. The funeral service was held on January 30th at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center. 

Residents voice opposition to proposed DOT three lane conversion

Discussion of a DOT-suggested three lane conversion in Grundy Center has sparked conversation amongst citizens - with many saying that a three lane roadway would not solve speeding issues in Grundy Center, and could even create more problems than it solves.
