Supervisors hash out budget details

The Grundy County Board of Supervisors heard its final round of budget requests and got to work on parsing the numbers during Monday morning’s regular meeting.
           
Katie Thornton-Lang and Michelle VanDeest of Grundy County Public Health presented first and laid out their budget along with some of their recent work. GCPH recently received a $3,700 grant for suicide prevention, which they hope to implement at all of the county’s high schools, and Thornton-Lang told the board it came as a surprise.
           

Waterloo man charged in Johns murder

A Waterloo man who had long been suspected as a person of interest in the death of Michael Johns in 2017 has been formally charged with first degree murder, according to a press release issued by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
           

Thoren stepping down as Spartans football coach

It's something he's poured himself into; the first one at practice, the last to leave.
 
He's gone to plenty of football clinics as well to hone his craft, but one thing he hears from coaches brings him pause.
 
"So many coaches talk about how they don't have enough time for their kids and family," Thoren said. "I decided that I'm not going to be that person."
 

First two quarters plenty for Grundy girls

GRUNDY CENTER – Class 2A's top-ranked Grundy Center girls basketball team put together two big quarters at the start of Saturday's game with BCLUW, finishing the night as 59-36 winners against the Comets.
 
Hailey Wallis led the Spartans with 19 points, Brooke Flater added 14 points and Kylie Willis had 10 points. Katie Thompson had eight for the Comets and Bailey Ashton, Madison Ubben and Jaelyn Allen all kicked in six points each.
 

Catching on: Spartan boys rout BCLUW for 4th straight win

GRUNDY CENTER – After a rough start, the Grundy Center boys basketball team is bringing its 'A' game to the court.
 
The Spartans won their fourth consecutive game with a big 74-46 win over BCLUW on Saturday night in Grundy Center.
 
Tanner Appel led Grundy Center with 13 points, four rebounds and three steals. Joe Johnson added 11 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks and Mitchell Munson led a productive Spartans bench with 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
 

Johanna "Jo" Coffman

Johanna “Jo” Coffman, 92, of Grundy Center, formerly of Reinbeck, passed away on January 19, 2019, at Creekside Senior Living in Grundy Center. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 23, from 5-7 PM at French-Hand Chapel in Reinbeck. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 24, at 10:30 AM at First Baptist Church in Grundy Center with Reverend John Mathew officiating.

Merlyn Mennen

Merlyn Dean Mennen, age 82, of Grundy Center passed away January 14, 2019, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo surrounded by loved ones. Celebration of life will be Saturday, January 26 at 10:30 am with a visitation starting at 9:30 am at Colfax Center Presbyterian Church in Holland.

Blue shift: D-NH girls run through Warhawks

DIKE – A second-quarter explosion powered Dike-New Hartford girls basketball to a 69-37 victory over West Fork last Thursday.
 
D-NH junior Katie Knock scored 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting, adding four assists and five steals. Ellie Foster scored 12 points coming off the bench, with Taylor Kvale contributing eight points.
 
"We got a lot of fast breaks and were pushing the ball well and got some good layups," Knock said.
 

D-NH boys defeat familiar postseason rival

DIKE – Dike-New Hartford's boys basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter of a 51-49 victory over West Fork on Thursday in Dike.
 
The win is the first for the Wolverines against West Fork, after the Warhawks claimed the first four meetings in the two teams' history, including three postseason clashes.
