Brandt, Wallis, Foster named IGCA All-District

   Three Register-area girls basketball players were named to all-district teams by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association in teams released on Wednesday.
   AGWSR’s Maddie Brandt was selected to the Class 1A team, Grundy Center’s Hailey Wallis was picked for the 2A team and Dike-New Hartford’s Ellie Foster earned a spot on the 3A team. Additionally, Grundy Center coach Matt Lindeman was named 2A Central District’s Coach of the Year following the Spartans’ 19-3 campaign.

Johnson triumphs in emotional state wrestling title victory

   DES MOINES – Trent Johnson has given everything to wrestling.
   He grew up on the mats as a kindergarten grappler, spent countless hours in wrestling rooms and weight rooms, traveling to events, finding time for workouts between the other sports he loved playing with his teammates.
   Johnson had already taken home three medals from the state wrestling tournament before he stepped foot in Wells Fargo Arena as a Dike-New Hartford senior.

Guilty on all counts: Knudsen faces up to 80 years after conviction

Grundy County Attorney Erika Allen uttered these words during her closing statements to the jury in the trial of Paul Ryan Knudsen, a 39-year-old rural Cedar Falls man who was convicted of three counts of Third Degree Sexual Abuse and one count of Lascivious Conduct with a Minor on Monday afternoon after a four day trial in Grundy Center. He now faces up to 80 years in prison.
 

Second half surge leads Wolverines to district win

The Dike-New Hartford boys put up a whopping 50 points in the second half en route to an 83-47 Class 2A, District 5 semifinal win over Waterloo Columbus on Thursday night in Parkersburg.
           
Star senior Ben Latusek finished the game with 25 points, nine rebounds and four assists to lead the way for the Wolverines (20-3), while Connor Blough added 16 and Broden Coulter had 12. D-NH shot a stellar 31-of-52 (59.6 percent from the field) and broke away after leading just 33-30 at halftime.

Supervisors receive road, courthouse updates

The Grundy County Board of Supervisors got word on some recent road projects as well as an update on the courthouse from custodian Mark Jungling during Tuesday morning’s regular meeting.
           

BCLUW board sets preliminary tax rate for 2017-2018

During an almost three-hour meeting on Monday evening, the BCLUW board of education set its preliminary property tax rate for the 2017-2018 school year and discussed budgetary matters at the high school media center.
           

"Barn Quilt Guy" speaks in Beaman

Barn quilts are about as Iowan as corn and pork tenderloins, but they have a secret history that many residents may be unaware of: they were actually used as codes to help escaping slaves along the Underground Railroad during the 19th century. Danny Steiber of Waverly, informally known as the “barn quilt guy,” addressed a crowd of about 15 on Saturday morning at the Beaman Memorial Library to explain this process and show off many of the barn quilts around Grundy County.
           
“Some of these people love their barn quilts more than their John Deere tractors,” he said.

Trojans, once again, end Cougar girls postseason run

   CLARKSVILLE - Post-season nemesis Turkey Valley once again derailed the AGWSR girls’ basketball team.
   For the third consecutive season, the Cougars couldn't best the Trojans in a 47-33 loss in a Class 1A Region 3 final at Clarksville High School on Monday.
   Second-ranked Turkey Valley turned back a late challenge by the No. 14 Cougars to earn one of eight tickets to the 1A state tourney field. Turkey Valley will play Janesville in a quarterfinal matchup on Monday, Feb. 27.
