Mexican restaurant set to open in Grundy Center

GRUNDY CENTER – Residents of Grundy Center who’ve been dreaming of tamales and tacos can rejoice – a Mexican restaurant is set to open in Grundy Center as early as next week.
Valentin Garcia, Grundy Center’s newest business owner, will be offering authentic Mexican cooking locally at his new restaurant: Pancho Villa.
“I’m really excited to be opening here,” Garcia said. “I feel like this is a great community, and I think we’ll do well here.”

Grassley kicks off 99-counties tour in Grundy Center

GRUNDY CENTER – Late last week, Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) kicked off his annual 99-counties tour with a visit to Grundy Center, where he toured the Environmental Lubricants Manufacturing plant and held a public forum with community members.
Among the many topics Grassley addressed was domestic manufacturing; specifically what opportunities may be on the horizon for Midwest ag and manufacturing companies such as ELM.
“I think we need to get back to what we can do to export more,” Grassley said.

Johnson, Meinders win NICL wrestling titles

   PARKERSBURG –  The Dike-New Hartford wrestling team earned its opportunities at the North Iowa Cedar League Tournament last Saturday, but the end of the day left the Wolverines wanting a little bit more.
   Trent Johnson won his fourth career NICL title and was named the league’s Outstanding Wrestler of the Year as D-NH took second place in the team standings at the league tourney at Aplington-Parkersburg High School in Parkersburg.

Grundy Center Police Department warns citizens to take precautions

GRUNDY CENTER – After a recent uptick in petty crimes, the Grundy Center Police Department hopes to remind citizens to take precautions, and be proactive.
“Grundy Center is a wonderfully safe community, but unfortunately, we still have things happen,” said Captain Kyle Waugh of the GCPD. “Most of it’s petty crimes, but we still want to remind people to be on the lookout.”
Waugh said that so far this winter, the police department has taken numerous calls of stolen packages, petty thefts, and items stolen from vehicles.

Supervisors approve contribution to Grundy Center Main Street project

After rejecting an initial proposal on a split vote, the Grundy County Board of Supervisors approved a $3,000 contribution to the Grundy Center Main Street project as the city applies for a Community Development Block Grant from the state.
           

Big second quarter lifts Mustang boys past Spartans

A 27-point second quarter from the visitors on the scoreboard decimated the Grundy Center boys and effectively ended any hopes for a comeback as East Marshall coasted to an 84-55 conference win on Friday night.
           

Trinkle named ICCA Coach of the Year

Cheerleading has been a lifelong passion for BCLUW coach Kelly Trinkle, and others have taken notice as she was recently informed that she will receive the Iowa Cheerleading Coach’s Association’s Coach of the Year Award at a banquet in April.
           
“I had never really thought about getting it or receiving it. I was super surprised, but very honored,” Trinkle said.
           

Wellsburg welcomes new fire truck

After almost five years of planning and 1,100 miles of travel, the city of Wellsburg has a new fire truck, the third in its arsenal, and fire chief Greg Winger and mayor Cami Nederhoff spoke to The Grundy Register about the long process late last week.
           
“We’re very excited,” Nederhoff said. “We found a piece of equipment that not only balances the taxpayer dollars within the city of Wellsburg as well as the needs of the fire department.”
           

Spartan girls pull away late to outlast Mustangs

The Grundy Center girls overcame a sluggish first half and pulled away late to pick up a 46-33 home conference win over East Marshall last Friday night and sweep the season series with the Mustangs.
           
“I don’t know if we really ever got going, but we were able to make a few baskets on the tail end there,” Grundy Center coach Matt Lindeman said.
