GCPD announces winner of squad car design contest

GRUNDY CENTER – After two months of planning, composing and creating, one Grundy Center art student’s hard work has finally paid off.
Josey Davis, a freshman in Ronda Sternhagen’s Fundamentals of Art class, will see her design printed on the exterior of the Grundy Center Police Department’s newest squad car.
The announcement came after Monday night’s Grundy Center city council meeting, when the police department and art department presented the top five student designs for the council’s vote.

Bertrand discusses run for congress during meeting in Grundy Center

GRUNDY CENTER – Last Friday, Senator Rick Bertrand stumped his way around the easternmost reaches of Iowa’s fourth congressional district – including Grundy Center – to announce his run for congress.
At his stop in Grundy Center, Bertrand held a meeting at the Kling Memorial Library where he spoke on why he’s running for congress, and what his priorities will be if he’s elected.

Building permits prove to be a hot topic at city council meeting

GRUNDY CENTER – On Monday night, the Grundy Center city council meeting gathered a large crowd of people who voiced concerns about the city’s building permit fees.
 During the public forum, several community members addressed the council. One of those people was Barbara Smith, who has lived in Grundy Center for over 50 years, and developed many commercial and residential properties in the community over that time period.

Austin’s Angels: Woman thanks people of Grundy County for helping save her son’s life

GRUNDY CENTER – For many years, Becky and Mark Szegda lived a normal life at their home in Grundy Center, and on May 2, 1980, Becky gave birth to a son – Austin. But not long after this happy moment, everything changed. Becky was told to enjoy the time she had with her son, as he likely wouldn’t live to be a year old.
Now, thirty-six years later, Becky is happily celebrating her son’s birthday, and she would like to thank the people of Grundy County for helping make it possible.

Local family donates bench to courthouse

GRUNDY CENTER – Every year, the Meyers family gets together in rural Grundy Center for their Meyers Family Reunion, and at last year’s meet up, the group decided they wanted to something special with the extra funds in their treasury.
After some talk, they decided to donate a bench for the Grundy County Courthouse in memory of Samuel and Susanna Meyers, the first of the Meyers who settled in the area in 1877.

Earl Biersner

Earl Biersner, 83, of Cedar Falls passed away on April 28 at Unity Point Allen Hospital. Funeral services were held May 2 at Dike United Methodist Church and visitation was May 1 at Richardson Funeral Home in Cedar Falls. 

Wilma Freese

Wilma Freese, 87, of Dike passed away Tuesday, April 26 at her home. Funeral services were held April 29 at Richardson Funeral Service, Cedar Falls. Visitation was held the hour prior.

Three local schools finish in top half of crowded field at Hudson Relays

The Dike-New Hartford, Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck and BCLUW girls’ track teams finished sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, at the Hudson Relays last Monday night.
 
The 20-team field featured plenty of talent from around the area, and the local schools there recorded just three first place finishes: BCLUW’s Samantha Ubben in the 800 (2:30.12), AGWSR’s Bethany Lippert in the high jump (4’10”) and the D-NH 4x400 team (4:11.53).
           

GC/G-R boys experience one stroke win, loss in same week

The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys had quite an interesting week as they fell to Dike-New Hartford by a single stroke on Thursday before bouncing back to edge out Roland-Story for the team title at the Spartan Invitational on Saturday.
