Mental Health Month: Local man shares his experience with mental illness

GRUNDY CENTER – Each May, people across the nation observe Mental Health Month. The goal of Mental Health Month is to raise awareness and educate people about mental illnesses while removing the stigma that surrounds This year’s theme is “Life With A Mental Illness,” which gives people a look into the everyday life of someone diagnosed with a mental illness.

GCPD welcomes two new officers

GRUNDY CENTER – Recently, the Grundy Center Police Department welcomed two new officers to the force – Officer Alissa Loew and Officer Justin Fox.
Both Loew and Fox have been with the department for a number of months now, but have recently completed their training at the Law Enforcement Academy and are now certified Grundy Center Police Department officers.

Building permits prove to be a hot topic at city council meeting

GRUNDY CENTER – On Monday night, the Grundy Center city council meeting gathered a large crowd of people who voiced concerns about the city’s building permit fees.
 During the public forum, several community members addressed the council. One of those people was Barbara Smith, who has lived in Grundy Center for over 50 years, and developed many commercial and residential properties in the community over that time period.

Austin’s Angels: Woman thanks people of Grundy County for helping save her son’s life

GRUNDY CENTER – For many years, Becky and Mark Szegda lived a normal life at their home in Grundy Center, and on May 2, 1980, Becky gave birth to a son – Austin. But not long after this happy moment, everything changed. Becky was told to enjoy the time she had with her son, as he likely wouldn’t live to be a year old.
Now, thirty-six years later, Becky is happily celebrating her son’s birthday, and she would like to thank the people of Grundy County for helping make it possible.

Local family donates bench to courthouse

GRUNDY CENTER – Every year, the Meyers family gets together in rural Grundy Center for their Meyers Family Reunion, and at last year’s meet up, the group decided they wanted to something special with the extra funds in their treasury.
After some talk, they decided to donate a bench for the Grundy County Courthouse in memory of Samuel and Susanna Meyers, the first of the Meyers who settled in the area in 1877.

Earl Biersner

Earl Biersner, 83, of Cedar Falls passed away on April 28 at Unity Point Allen Hospital. Funeral services were held May 2 at Dike United Methodist Church and visitation was May 1 at Richardson Funeral Home in Cedar Falls. 

Wilma Freese

Wilma Freese, 87, of Dike passed away Tuesday, April 26 at her home. Funeral services were held April 29 at Richardson Funeral Service, Cedar Falls. Visitation was held the hour prior.
