Truck accident causes damages at That Place Steakhouse

Heavy rains and strong winds caused a trucker to lose control of his vehicle on Highway 14 and swerve into the parking lot of That Place Steakhouse just west of Conrad on Wednesday morning at about 8:30 a.m.
 

GCHS vocal students make Spartan history

GRUNDY CENTER – At the 2016 State Solo and Ensemble Contest, Grundy Center vocal students wowed judges, and shattered school records, earning 11 “I” Superior ratings from 12 performances, along with two perfect scores.
“In the last twenty years, there has only been one perfect score,” said vocal instructor Emily Boquet, adding that two perfect scores in one day is unheard of. “It's just really rare to get a perfect score in vocal music.”

Joyce Robertson

Joyce Robertson, 81, of Grundy Center passed away April 21 at her home in Grundy Center. Visitation was held on April 26 at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center, and a funeral was held immediately after. Memorials may be directed to the family. 

Rachel Omvig

Rachel Omvig, 27, of Cedar Falls, passed away suddenly on April 17 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Visitation was held April 22 at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. A funeral service was held the following day at the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to the American Lutheran Church  of Grundy Center or the Cedar Bend Humane Society. 

Janice Kae Everts Duffy

Janice Kae Everts Duffy passed away on April 18 after a brief but courageous battle with illness. A Celebration of Life was held on April 26 at their home and another will be held in Iowa in June. In lieu of flowers please send memorials to the nursing program at Yavapai Community College, Prescott. 

City, AmericInn owner clash on hotel/motel tax

GRUNDY CENTER – On Tuesday, May 3, a public vote will be held on the implementation of a seven percent hotel/motel tax.
During this vote, citizens will have the chance to vote in favor of the hotel/motel tax, or against the tax. A majority vote, with no minimum number of votes, will determine whether or not the tax is passed and will be implemented.
In specific, the tax will affect one business: the AmericInn of Grundy Center, the only hotel in Grundy County.

GC/G-R boys upset Regina during perfect first week

The newly combined Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck soccer team got its season off to a roaring start last week with three straight victories, including an upset of second-ranked Iowa City Regina in Reinbeck on Friday night.
           

Conrad council approves mural funding request

The city of Conrad will contribute $5,000 in Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) funds to the mural project on the former Friday’s Auto Service building at the intersection of Center and Main Street after the city council approved a request during its monthly meeting on Thursday.
 
Betty Haker of the mural committee came before the council to speak on why she and her husband first moved to Conrad as well as the strong sense of community pride.
           

Tuesday Music Club set to present "Reel Music"

It’s become one of the longest running traditions around: every year since 1920, a group of women living within the BCLUW school district spend months preparing for a one-night only show in the spring. This year, the Tuesday Music Club will present “Reel Music,” a tribute to songs that have been made popular in movies, on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at the BCLUW High School Auditorium in Conrad.
