Rebels dismantle Comets to advance in district play

For the third straight year, Gladbrook-Reinbeck ended BCLUW’s season in Class 1A, District 9 play as the Rebels cruised to an 85-32 quarterfinal win over the Comets on Thursday night in Reinbeck.

The Rebels (20-2) never trailed in the contest, jumping out to a quick 4-0 lead on free throws from guards Joe Smoldt and Colton Dinsdale, and though the Comets bounced back with an Elijah Ralston three-pointer, Smoldt proceeded to hit one in response and make it 7-3. From there, G-R put its foot on the gas and never let up.

Comet postseason run ends with loss to Van Meter

An impressive postseason run that included a pair of road upsets over BGM and South Hardin came to an end for the BCLUW girls on Friday night as the Comets fell 44-29 on a cold shooting night to 11th ranked Van Meter in the Class 2A Region 5 semifinal in what was the final game ever played at the soon-to-be former Van Meter High School gymnasium.

“There are nights where it just goes like tonight, and you lose on nights like that,” BCLUW coach Dave Lee said. “And when you’re in the tournament, the tragic thing is that your season ends.”
