Area locals help solve hunger in Haiti

GRUNDY COUNTY – A drive to help others can lead people to very different places, to do very different things. For two Grundy County locals, this drive took them over 2,000 miles away to the island nation of Haiti.
Hunger, which has been a foremost problem in Haiti for years, is not as easily solved as it would seem – and that’s what led Darwin Cannegieter of Dike, and Julie Grunklee of Reinbeck, to travel to Haiti this January, where they used what they know best – agriculture – to work towards a solution.

GRUNDY CENTER – Along with eight other properties from around Iowa, the former First Baptist Church in Grundy Center has recently been named to Preservation Iowa’s Most Endangered Properties of 2016 list.
The Former First Baptist Church, which was built in 1918 after the previous church burned down, is one of the city’s oldest remaining properties, but for many years it has been an eyesore to the people of Grundy Center.

104 years young

Alice Ruter, who has lived most of her life around Wellsburg but currently resides at Arlington Place Assisted Living in Grundy Center, has resided in Grundy County for all but two of her years since before World War I— she’s 104 now, to be exact. Even as a centenarian, however, she maintains her trademark spunk and wit, and she recently sat down with The Grundy Register to discuss her life, family and what keeps her going.

“I’ve been a jack of all trades and a master of none,” she said with a laugh.

Comets hold off Crusaders in district opener

Led by senior Josh Sharp’s 23 point performance, the BCLUW boys beat Valley Lutheran for the second time this season on Monday night with a 59-53 win, and this time it came in a Class 1A, District 9 opener that will allow the Comets to advance and take on Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Thursday night.

“We’d been in a slump the last few games, and we just went back to the basics of the offense on Sunday in practice. I thought the kids performed really, really well,” BCLUW coach Luke Higgins said.

Comets withstand late comeback attempt to advance in regional opener

Basketball is a game of momentum, and Saturday night’s Class 2A regional opener between BGM and BCLUW featured a handful of huge runs and swings between the competing teams. In the end, however, the Comets held off a late BGM comeback attempt and advanced with a 63-54 road win in Brooklyn.

“I’m really proud of the girls because we could’ve folded. There were times this year where we would’ve just not fought back and continued to play,” BCLUW coach Dave Lee said.
