Grundy Center boys golf books state return

CEDAR FALLS – The Grundy Center boys golf team will return to the state tournament later this week after winning a district meet at Pheasant Ridge in Cedar Falls last Friday.
 
The Spartans will begin play at Westwood Golf Course in Newton on Thursday, May 23, the site of Grundy Center's state championship victory at last season's Class 1A meet. Play concludes on Friday, May 24.
 

Reinbeck couple charged with burglary, vehicle theft

A Reinbeck couple was arrested in Grundy County last weekend after allegedly stealing a truck from Cedar Rapids and attempting to break in to a rural residence near Dike.
           
Adam Rees, 36, and his wife Ashley, 32, have each been charged with Second Degree Theft and Third Degree Burglary, both Class D felonies. Chief Deputy Tim Wolthoff apprehended them on the morning of Sunday, May 12, upon arriving at a home on 160th Street about two miles west of Dike.
           

Class 1A girls notebook: Luhring earns another long jump medal (PHOTOS)

DES MOINES – This year felt a little different for Kyah Luhring.
 
The Spartan junior noted she had to work through injuries to get to a point where she could jump well enough to make it back to state.
  
She was ready on Thursday, jumping 17-1 for a third-place medal in the 1A girls long jump, her third time medaling in the event in as many tries for Luhring.
  
"I felt like I had nothing to lose once I was top 8," Luhring said. "I had been struggling to get up more for a longer jump and I thought about that and it really helped me."
  

Itzen joins Grundy Register staff as summer intern

A familiar face is joining The Grundy Register staff for the summer. Area native Jillian Itzen, who graduated from GCHS in 2016, has joined the team and is taking on a position as summer intern at the newspaper, where she will hone her skills in advertising, marketing and graphic design.
 

Supervisors accept retirement of longtime secondary roads employee

One of the county’s longest tenured employees announced his impending retirement recently after nearly four decades with the secondary roads department, and the board of supervisors accepted it at Monday morning’s regular meeting.
           
Ivan Groeneveld, the patrol operator out of the Buck Grove shed northeast of Wellsburg, had worked for Grundy County for 37 years. He worked his last day last Wednesday and is using up his vacation days before officially wrapping up his tenure on May 31.
           

Stolzman opens photography, custom apparel business in downtown GC

Business is booming in downtown Grundy Center, as more and more business owners flock to the area. Most recently, Conrad resident Steph Stolzman opened up her photography and custom apparel business on Main Street at the beginning of the month.
 
Located at 609 G Avenue, Stolzman Photography and Steph’s Boutique offers photography services, as well as custom printed apparel.

Grundy Center boys, BCLUW girls win NICL West track titles

ELDORA – The trophy case for Grundy Center boys track and field got a lot bigger this season.
 
The Spartans added another one last Thursday, earning the NICL West team title at Eldora.
 
Grundy Center scored 170 points and the BCLUW boys were the runners-up with 136 points in a meet dominated by the Spartans and Comets, two 1A teams expected to score considerable points at the state meet later this month. AGWSR scored 49 points in sixth place and the Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys got 13 points for seventh place.

GRUNDY CENTER – Roll on through adversity, push past barriers or leap right over them.
  
Full-throttle competition pushed plenty of local athletes through to the state meet as part of a 1A co-ed state-qualifying track and field meet in Grundy Center on Friday.
  
The Grundy Center boys ended the night as district champions, qualifying in 10 events in the process.   
  

Grundy Center golf claims both NICL West titles

Grundy Center golf ended Monday with two NICL West titles and nine all-conference golfers after the girls won the team title in Eldora and the boys won in State Center.
 
The Spartan girls shot a 402 to win the team title by 34 strokes over runner-up BCLUW. AGWSR placed fourth with 479 strokes and Gladbrook-Reinbeck was seventh, shooting a 509.
