Grassley, Sweeney hold listening posts in Grundy Center and Dike

Talk of healthcare dominated the discussion during State Representative Pat Grassley and State Senator Annette Sweeney’s listening posts held in Grundy Center and Dike on Friday.
 
Local healthcare representatives showed out to both meetings to thank the legislators for their support of rural, critical access care hospitals like the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center.
 

Margaret Ohrt

Margaret Lucile Ohrt, 91, of Reinbeck, passed away on March 9, 2019, at Parkview Manor in Reinbeck. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 13, from 5-7 PM at French-Hand Chapel in Reinbeck. A Funeral Service will follow on Thursday, March 14, at 10:30 AM at Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Reinbeck with Reverend Joel Love officiating. 

Isabel George

Isabel George, 96, of Grundy Center and formerly of Grinnell died on February 17, 2019, at Creekside Western Home in Grundy Center. A funeral mass has been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 23rd, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grinnell with Rev. Ross Epping officiating.

Erna Toomsen

Erna Toomsen passed away at the age of 82 on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Berdene and her brother, Bernerd and her grandson, Julian.

Joan Peters

Joan Peters, 77, of Conrad, IA, passed away Friday, March 8, 2019, at her residence. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at the First Presbyterian Church in Conrad. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m., until the time of the services, Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at the First Presbyterian Church in Conrad. 

Smith honored as Main Street Hero

Though he may be gone, longtime Grundy Center resident Richard Smith’s legacy lives on through the countless contributions to community development he and his wife Barb have made throughout Grundy Center.
 
During the Main Street Iowa awards ceremony held in Des Moines on Friday, Richard’s work was recognized when he was honored as a Main Street Hero; an award from Main Street Iowa that recognizes an individual posthumously for having been an outstanding volunteer and visionary for community development.
 

Donald Nason

Donald “Don” L. Nason, passed away peacefully in his home on February 22, 2019. Funeral services for Don were held March 1 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown.

Gutknecht new Spartan girls golf coach

Heather Gutknecht is ready to help the Grundy Center girls golf team achieve its goals this spring.
 
A volunteer assistant coach for the last two seasons, Gutknecht has stepped into the head coaching role for the Spartans in place of Jocilyn Onnen.
 
"We have really great girls that are lifelong learners of the game," Gutknecht said. "I fell in love with coaching and working with these girls when I started helping out with the team and when the opportunity arose, I applied for it and was really excited to get it."
 

Marvin Janssen

Marvin Henry Janssen, 87, of Wellsburg passed away on March 9, 2019, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13 at the Abels Funeral and Cremation Service, Doyen Chapel, in Wellsburg. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 14 at the Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in rural Ackley.
