G-R superintendent addresses 'targeted for improvement' designation

The Iowa Department of Education recently designated over 300 school buildings in Iowa as ‘targets for improvement’ according to Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) guidelines, and in Grundy County, the Gladbrook-Reinbeck Elementary School in Reinbeck was the only facility to make the list. In a recent e-mail exchange with The Grundy Register, Superintendent David Hill explained what that means for G-R and how it fits into the bigger picture.

Another year older and still no wiser: the best and worst of 2018

The time has finally come to close the book on the year that was and gaze ahead with a head full of bright-eyed optimism for 2019—because as we all know, a new calendar is a panacea to all of the problems we’re facing and a stern reminder to right everything that’s wrong with us. In 2018, there were good things: Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga together onscreen, the Grundy Center girls coming within a basket of a state championship and Patrick Mahomes, to name a few. There were also bad things: politics, politics, and, oh yeah, politics.

Spartan girls elude Cougar upset bid

GRUNDY CENTER – A defense-forward first half played right into the AGWSR girls basketball team's wheelhouse.

Class 2A's top-ranked Grundy Center girls answered with a bit more offensive fire in the second half of a 49-34 Spartan victory on Friday night.

Grundy Center (7-0, 5-0 NICL West) outscored AGWSR 33-19 after halftime. Hailey Wallis led the way with 17 points and eight rebounds. Kylie Willis scored 10 points, with all 10 coming in the second half, and Brooke Flater chipped in seven, with each bringing down four rebounds apiece.

A year stronger: Hames, Cougars take down Spartans

GRUNDY CENTER – Alex Hames knew teams would be coming for him this season.

The leading scorer for AGWSR boys basketball last season got most of his points from beyond the arc, but that wasn't going to cut it this winter, especially if Hames and the Cougars were going to advance their game to the next level.

Hames committed himself to the weight room heading into his senior season, and the result is a stronger, well-rounded senior leader that dropped in a game-high 22 points in AGWSR's 49-34 victory over Grundy Center on Friday night.

SH-BCLUW's Willett breaks Storm career pin record

Coby Willett didn't take much time to celebrate his new record on Saturday morning.

The South Hardin-BCLUW wrestler became the new career pins leader for the Storm after pinning Forest City's Kaleb Umbaugh in a first-round match at Saturday's Comet Invitational at North Polk High School.

Willett's 76th pin of his career passes the old record of 75, set by Tyler Lutes, who earlier this year finished his Wartburg wrestling career as a Division III national runner-up.

Burglar steals $2,000 worth of tools from Norby's

The Grundy Center Police Department is currently investigating a burglary that occurred at Norby’s Farm Fleet in Grundy Center earlier this month, which resulted in over $2,000 worth of merchandise being stolen.

According to GC Police Chief Doug Frost, sometime in the early morning hours of December 4, a burglar broke into Norby’s by cutting the phone lines to disable the alarm, and smashing a window between the front sliding doors to enter.
