Doris D. Petrie, 90, of Conrad passed away November 27, 2018, at Oakview Nursing Home in Conrad. Memorial services were held on December 4 at the Green Mountain United Church of Christ in Green Mountain.

GCHS students to perform "Mamma Mia"

Grundy Center High School vocal and drama students will be bringing the wildly popular hit musical, “Mamma Mia,” to the stage this weekend for their annual school musical.
 
The audience can expect a hilarious script, colorful characters and peppy disco dance music in the students’ rendition of the hit broadway show. There will be two performances scheduled for this weekend; one at 7 p.m. on Saturday, December 8th and one at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 9th.
 

Christmas comes to Wellsburg

Christmas cheer will be in the air this weekend as Wellsburg celebrates the season with a variety of fun, free holiday events and activities including the Hometown Holiday Treefest, a visit from Santa, business open houses and more.
 

Developer plans new housing addition north of New Hartford

An exciting new development is currently in the works for New Hartford, as a developer hopes to transform an empty plot of land at the north edge of town into the city’s newest housing development.
 
Though the process is still in the preliminary stages, the proposed housing addition could add up to 50 new houses to town, and eventually add around $225,000 per year to the city’s annual revenue.
 

INRCOG updates GC council on upper story housing project

Progress on a renovation that would add apartment units to the upper story of the former Frederick Furniture building at 703 G Ave. has been temporarily stalled due to preservation requirements by the state.
 
Back in May, the City of Grundy Center and a private developer - Matthew Bockes - were awarded a $500,000 grant as part of a unique Upper Story Housing pilot project funded through the IEDA (Iowa Economic Development Authority). Bockes’ plan is to add four apartments to the upper story of the building.
 

Under construction: Latta Harris receives BIG grant for store remodel

During their Monday night meeting, the Grundy Center City Council approved a $10,000 BIG Grant to Blain Moats for a storefront renovation project at Latta Harris.Blain Moats of Latta Harris in Grundy Center, says the storefront remodel has been a big need for some time now.
 
“The BIG grant will help replace the door and windows and the front display, and we’re also doing some re-structuring of the layout inside to create more office space,” he said. “We’re looking to expand our staffing and we need more office space for that.”

Making spirits bright: Home Care Assistance, Natural Grind team up to help seniors

The holidays are a time for joy, celebration and giving, but for some senior citizens, they’re a painful reminder of the struggles they can face to make ends meet.
           
Against that backdrop, Home Care Assistance (HCA) of the Cedar Valley has teamed up with the Natural Grind in Grundy Center to create “Operation Merry and Bright,” an effort to provide Christmas gifts for area residents in need. HCA Care Manager Sara Wegmann sees it as a perfect opportunity to give back to the community she calls home.
           

A year later, little progress reported in Johns case

December 1 marked the one-year anniversary of the discovery of the body of Michael Johns, a 28-year-old Grundy Center man, in an apparent homicide between Greene and Charles City in southern Floyd County. A suspect has never been formally charged in connection with his death, and the law enforcement agencies tasked with investigating the case have released almost no information publicly in the months since.
