The BCLUW drama department recently wrapped up a three day run performing "Big Fish," the stage adaptation of the Tim Burton movie of the same name. A selection of photos from the matinee show on Sunday can be seen below.

Toby A. Morrow passed away on November 8, 2018. Toby's family is planning a celebration of his life that will be held in the spring in Beaman.

Local programs commemorate 100th anniversary of WWI Armistice

Community members came together around the county on Monday morning to observe Veteran’s Day, honoring those who fought and sacrificed their lives in service to our country.
 
The program in Grundy Center, presented by the Grundy Center National Honor Society students, specifically focused on the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I, which was signed in the French town of Compiegne at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month: November 11th, 1918.
 

Fashion for all: Funky Zebras boutique opens in Grundy Center

The newest business in downtown Grundy Center, Funky Zebras, is offering fashion for women of all ages and sizes - and more importantly - striving to make every woman feel beautiful.

 

Owner Robyn Moats opened up her new clothing store at 607 G Avenue last Tuesday, where she has a wide array of clothing from size small to 3X, shoes, accessories and even kids clothing for sale.

 

Moats is a longtime Grundy Center resident who decided to leave her corporate HR job and follow a calling to open her own clothing boutique.

 

Kicking tobacco's butt: GCPH teaches local fourth graders about the dangers of tobacco

Last week, Grundy County Public Health visited with local fourth grade students to educate them about the dangers of tobacco as part of the GCPH’s public health programming called “Life Skills.”

 

The students participated in activities that taught them how tobacco negatively impacts their daily life – from seeing a blackened smoker’s lung to witnessing how tobacco can affect the teeth, gums, tongue and more, and even inspecting a jar full of cigarette tar.

 

GC Chamber of Commerce approves dissolution, Main Street merger

The Grundy Center Chamber of Commerce board members voted unanimously to approve the Chamber’s dissolution at a public meeting on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Board members Brittany Liekweg, Maria Oltman, Katie Lewis and John Heeren each voted in favor of the dissolution, and agreed on a merger with Main Street Grundy Center to form a joint Chamber-Main Street organization.
 
The Main Street Grundy Center Board of Directors will meet early next week to discuss and approve the merger on their end.
 

Light up the night: Main Street Mingle/Festival of Trees offers holiday fun for all

Get ready for a holly, jolly good time as Grundy Center comes to life with the spirit of Christmas next weekend.
 
Main Street Grundy Center and the Grundy Center Chamber of Commerce have teamed up to bring a festive and fun event to the community - the Main Street Mingle/Festival of Trees - which will be held on Saturday, November 24 in downtown Grundy Center.
 

Holland Post Office open again after temporary closure

The Holland Post Office re-opened last Friday after being closed for roughly a week after a problem was discovered at the office.
 
According to Postal Service spokesperson Kristy Anderson, an employee at the post office noticed some smoke coming out of an outlet, and contacted the fire department. The department responded, and discovered several hot spots around the building.

Answering the call: Dike native Crew featured in Navy recruiting video

Five years ago, Tyler Crew found himself yearning for adventure—specifically, something more than a college degree and a run of the mill desk job. So he did something bold: the 20-year-old walked into the Navy recruitment office in Waterloo, quit school at UNI and signed his enlistment papers on Veterans Day.
           
“He came back one day, and he said to me, ‘Mom, college is your dream and not mine, and I joined the Navy today,’” his mother said, mimicking her gasp when he delivered the news.
