WATERLOO – One of the most decorated golfers in Iowa high school history wrapped up his career the same way he started it, on top of the standings at the Class 2A state golf meet.
MARSHALLTOWN – The Grundy Center girls golf team climbed four spots over the final 18 holes of last week’s 36-hole Class 2A Girls State Tournament last Thursday and Friday, placing second at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.
GRUNDY CENTER – The Grundy Center softball team rode a hot-hitting offense to victories in its first three games of the season last week, 12-2 over Class 2A No. 5-ranked Jesup, 4-0 over Iowa Falls-Alden and 12-4 over Oelwein.
GRUNDY CENTER – Ethan Meester had a pair of hits and two runs batted in while also picked up the pitching victory Friday as Grundy Center topped Marshalltown 9-2 at the George Wilhelm Sports Complex.
DES MOINES – The Grundy Center-Gladbrook Reinbeck boys soccer team took a trip to Des Moines to compete in the 1A state soccer meet after beating Cedar Vally Christian/Alburnett 1-0 in the conference championship.
BOONE – On Friday, May 29, Iowa high school girls state golf came to an end.
The two-day meet in Boone featured 10 teams and 21 individual qualifiers, totaling 81 competitors representing 29 district 1A schools across the state.
The Grundy Center boys track and field team recorded what is believed to be its best-ever State Track team finish Saturday, placing second in Class 2A.
The Spartans finished with 56 team points and were behind only Alburnett, which scored 66 on its way to the championship. Treynor finished third with 39 points.
Senior Brayden Davie gave Grundy Center its third state championship of the Thursday Class 2A session, winning the 400-meter dash in personal best time.
Davie took the lead out of the starting blocks and won by 1.35 seconds. The title was Davie's first individually after he was part of relay championships a year ago.
The Grundy Center girls track team won its first 4 x 800-meter title since 2010 Thursday, taking the Class 2A event at the State Track and Field Meet in Des Moines Thursday.
The Spartans took the lead on the front stretch as Raelyn Steinmeyer opened with her best split of the season. Karlee Lynch extended the lead and Maddy Hendershot extended it even more, giving Grace Storjohann a seven-second lead entering the anchor leg.
Grundy Center senior Emerson Vokes earned his second straight Class 2A 3,200-meter state track championship Thursday, winning the event in 9 minutes, 13.57 seconds.
Vokes was challenged through the first 2,400 meters before pulling away in the final 800 and winning by more than 12 seconds.
LEGRAND – Grundy Center outscored Denver 14-8 in the final two events, coming from behind to edge the Cyclones for its second North Iowa Cedar League track title in the past three years.
LEGRAND – Grundy Center won three of the seven relays on its way to its third straight North Iowa Cedar League Girls Track and Field championship Thursday at East Marshall High School in LeGrand.
WATERLOO – The Grundy Center girls golf team captured its first North Iowa Cedar League championship since 2023 Monday, winning the NICL Conference Meet at the Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course in Waterloo.
