New Pool Proposed for Dike, Committee Builds Momentum

DIKE – It’s been a hot summer and many residents in Dike have missed access to the local pool. Due to infrastructure and safety concerns, the pool is closed indefinitely and has not been open since summer of 2023. A group of enthusiastic residents have started a grassroots effort to rectify the situation and bring a new pool to Dike. 

Family YMCA of Grundy County to host block party Aug. 19

GRUNDY CENTER — The Family YMCA of Grundy County is inviting area residents to an evening of activities as it hosts a block party Wednesday, Aug. 19.

The event will run from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Black Hawk County YMCA, 669 S. Hackett Road in Waterloo. 

Beacon Christian Church to host benefit meal for Tack family

CONRAD — Beacon Christian Church of Conrad is turning a simple cookout into a community-wide effort to surround the Tack family with support during a difficult time.

The church will host a free-will donation meal Sunday, Aug. 23, from 4 to 6 p.m., with all money raised going directly to the Tack family.

Former Hawkeye Robert Smith paid visit to Dike Public Library for author event

DIKE — Former Iowa Hawkeye football player Robert L. Smith Jr. brought the story of his journey from a childhood in Dallas to college football, education and public service to Dike this week.

Grundy County Conservation hosts hunter safety class

GRUNDY COUNTY — Grundy County Conservation recently gave area residents an opportunity to learn about safe and responsible hunting through a hunter safety class held Thursday, July 30.

The class ran from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and included a trip to the Izaak Walton facility in Reinbeck for a live-firing session.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck elementary project enters final stretch ahead of new school year

REINBECK — Construction crews are entering the final stretch of a major renovation project at Gladbrook-Reinbeck Elementary School, with district officials reporting that work remains on schedule as the start of the 2026-27 school year approaches.

Daphne, Easton named Dike Watermelon Days Little Miss and Mister

DIKE — Two young members of the Dike community had a special place in this year's Watermelon Days festivities after being selected as the 2026 Little Miss and Mister.

Peoples Savings Bank announced that Daphne* was named Little Miss and Easton* was selected as Little Mister following this year's contest.

Dike-New Hartford cross country enters season with strong returning core

DIKE-NEW HARTFORD— With a strong group of returning runners and a productive summer of training behind them, the Dike-New Hartford cross country teams are preparing to hit the course with plenty of experience this fall.

Coach Will Reingardt said roughly 26 runners participated in the Wolverines’ preseason camp, with that number expected to climb into the low 30s when official practice begins Monday.

BCLUW mourns loss of High School Principal Josh Tack following weekend accident

CONRAD — The BCLUW Community School District is mourning the loss of High School Principal Joshua “Josh” Tack, 33, of Union, who died from injuries sustained in a weekend crash in Dubuque County.

The Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office identified Tack as one of two people who died following a crash involving a UTV and a car Saturday night, Aug. 8.

Peoples Savings Bank donates $4,000 to Dike-New Hartford for Bound

DIKE-NEW HARTFORD — Peoples Savings Bank is helping Dike-New Hartford students, families and fans stay connected to school activities with a $4,000 donation toward the district’s use of Bound.

Derek Kruger, of Wellsburg, was announced as this year’s Grundy County awardee for the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. 

Busy summer for Grundy Center Kiwanis

The Grundy Center Kiwanis have been busy this summer with a variety of local goodwill activities around town. 

Throughout July, the Kiwanis have been preparing food for freewill donation around Grundy Center. On Saturday, July 11, the group hosted their annual Felix Grundy Festival Kiwanis breakfast at the local high school, served up by members of the baseball team.

GRUNDY COUNTY — As part of his 100 Town Hall Tour, State Auditor Rob Sand visited Grundy County on Wednesday, August 5, answering questions from the community during a town hall event. Recently, his proposal regarding kids, social media and online safety has become a topic of conversation and interest to voters.

Grundy Center schools announces key back-to-school dates

GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center Community School District families can begin preparing for the new school year with registration opening this week and classes set to begin later this month.

Online registration opens Wednesday, Aug. 5. Families needing assistance with the registration process can receive in-person support from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, in the middle/high school commons.

Grundy County supervisors approve budget amendment, hear Pioneer Trail update

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy County Board of Supervisors approved a fiscal year 2027 budget amendment and received an update on the future of the Pioneer Trail during its regular meeting Monday, Aug. 3.

The meeting opened with approval of the agenda, the Pledge of Allegiance and approval of the minutes from the previous meeting.
