With nothing but the open highway in front of him, a massive RV nicknamed “Sioux City Sue” and an expansive district sprawling from Inwood to New Hampton to cover, Democratic congressional candidate J.D. Scholten is doing everything he can to reach as many voters as possible before the June 5 primary. Last Monday, the bus stopped at The Mill, allowing the former minor league baseball player to meet with prospective constituents along with his friend Tracy Freese, a state senate candidate from Dike.
           

NEWTON – The Grundy Center boys golf team won the Class 1A state championship with a big turnaround on the second day of the tournament Friday at Westwood Golf Course in Newton.
 
The Spartans turned in a 327 team score on Friday, 29 strokes better than their Day 1 total. Friday's championship win is the third team title in school history and the first since 2005.
 
Harris-Lake Park was the team runner-up with a 687, followed by Exira/EH-K with a 696.
 

Up-and-coming country singer Jay Allen – a 2004 Dike-New Hartford graduate and native of Stout who’s pursuing a music career in Nashville – has been making headlines recently with his new song: “Blank Stares.”
 
In his poignant and emotionally stirring new song, Allen shares the story of his mother, Sherry Rich, who is in the late stages of her battle with early onset Alzheimer’s Disease. The song begins with a loving voicemail Sherry left on her son’s phone, which trails off as she forgets, hanging up only moments later.
