Supervisors vote to withhold annex related payments

The Grundy County Board of Supervisors narrowly voted to withhold two payments totaling just over $1,400 related to the installation of a water meter at the new annex building in Grundy Center during Monday morning’s regular meeting. 
           

On the road: Scholten stops at The Mill ahead of June primary

With nothing but the open highway in front of him, a massive RV nicknamed “Sioux City Sue” and an expansive district sprawling from Inwood to New Hampton to cover, Democratic congressional candidate J.D. Scholten is doing everything he can to reach as many voters as possible before the June 5 primary. Last Monday, the bus stopped at The Mill, allowing the former minor league baseball player to meet with prospective constituents along with his friend Tracy Freese, a state senate candidate from Dike.
           

D-NH's Weissenfluh wins individual title, Wolverines finish 4th

MARSHALLTOWN – Dike-New Hartford's Bo Weissenfluh ended his high school career as a state champion, winning the individual title at the 2A state golf meet in Marshalltown on Friday.
 

Grundy Center boys golf rallies for 1A state title

NEWTON – The Grundy Center boys golf team won the Class 1A state championship with a big turnaround on the second day of the tournament Friday at Westwood Golf Course in Newton.
 
The Spartans turned in a 327 team score on Friday, 29 strokes better than their Day 1 total. Friday's championship win is the third team title in school history and the first since 2005.
 
Harris-Lake Park was the team runner-up with a 687, followed by Exira/EH-K with a 696.
 

Spartan boys, AGWSR's Hames to 1A state golf

NASHUA – The Grundy Center boys golf team won a Class 1A district meet in Nashua on Friday afternoon to return to the state tournament later this week.
 
The Spartans shot 324 as a team, 17 strokes clear of runner up Bishop Garrigan of Algona, led by individual runner-up Jake Bangasser's 75. Grundy Center will be making its ninth appearance at the state meet in the last 10 seasons.

'Blank Stares': Stout native country singer shares song about mom's battle with Alzheimer's

Up-and-coming country singer Jay Allen – a 2004 Dike-New Hartford graduate and native of Stout who’s pursuing a music career in Nashville – has been making headlines recently with his new song: “Blank Stares.”
 
In his poignant and emotionally stirring new song, Allen shares the story of his mother, Sherry Rich, who is in the late stages of her battle with early onset Alzheimer’s Disease. The song begins with a loving voicemail Sherry left on her son’s phone, which trails off as she forgets, hanging up only moments later.
 

GCHS class of 2018 celebrates commencement

Sunday afternoon, family, friends and community members packed into the gymnasium to celebrate the graduation of Grundy Center High School’s Class of 2018.
           
The ceremony began with a welcome from the Class of 2018 President, Amber Laube, who gave a speech titled “Life’s About the Journey, Not the Destination.”
           

Norris brings message of small town populism to GC stop

Never one to rest on his laurels, Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Norris took a self-described “break” from the news and his smartphone on Friday morning while traveling to Grundy Center for a meet and greet at Pancho Villa, opting instead for a manual on agricultural policy. As he arrived, he got wind of two unrelated but alarming developments: a coalition of Democrats and conservative Republicans in the House of Representatives had torpedoed the federal farm bill, and 10 more students were dead in an apparent school shooting near Houston.
