In his poignant and emotionally stirring new song, Allen shares the story of his mother, Sherry Rich, who is in the late stages of her battle with early onset Alzheimer’s Disease. The song begins with a loving voicemail Sherry left on her son’s phone, which trails off as she forgets, hanging up only moments later.

Norris brings message of small town populism to GC stop

Never one to rest on his laurels, Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Norris took a self-described “break” from the news and his smartphone on Friday morning while traveling to Grundy Center for a meet and greet at Pancho Villa, opting instead for a manual on agricultural policy. As he arrived, he got wind of two unrelated but alarming developments: a coalition of Democrats and conservative Republicans in the House of Representatives had torpedoed the federal farm bill, and 10 more students were dead in an apparent school shooting near Houston.

The long, fun-filled summer Grundy County festival circuit will kick off this weekend as the small but mighty community of Beaman hosts its renowned Memorial Day celebration, complete with a heartfelt remembrance of the veterans who have died during armed conflicts and perhaps the most American tradition of all—a high school baseball tournament on Monday afternoon.

I missed you, Norm

Some people live to be praised and admired, and others can’t wait to be scolded.

As the snow birds return from their winter nests (and remind me that I’ll probably never be able to afford a winter nest or even retire), plenty of familiar faces are resurfacing around the area, and perhaps none more so—for me, anyway—than Norm Kruse, who’s always good for a comment, a laugh and a great conversation even if we disagree about everything we’re discussing.

Just weeks after giving Heath Myers and Joe Dier of Clearview Farms the go-ahead to construct a two-building hog site near the Grundy-Tama County line, the board of supervisors voted unanimously on Monday morning to recommend the approval of a similar site under the same management nearby in Palermo Township between Grundy Center and Beaman.

G-R receives three bids for Gladbrook asbestos removal

During a brief meeting at the high school last Tuesday, Gladbrook-Reinbeck school board member Rod Brockett, business manager Deb Oleson and Superintendent David Hill opened three bids for asbestos removal at the Gladbrook building as plans to demolish it move forward.

Because the fitness center and swimming pool are now likely to come down along with the rest of the facility, Hill noted that the board would need to accept a bid including both alternates.

“It’s a 99 percent chance we’ll do all three,” he said.
