Three earn NICL mat titles

CONRAD – The end of the 2013-14 wrestling season is not a fond memory for Dike-New Harford senior Tommy Irvin. 2014-15 appears to be better.
A year after illness led to tough losses and watching teammates at the state tournament, Irvin began the 2014-15 postseason in style Saturday, winning the 285-pound title at the North Iowa Cedar League tournament in Conrad.

NICL schools continue enrollment decline

    Grundy County school districts are not the only districts in this part of the state to see continued enrollment declines. A report compiled by The Grundy Register from Iowa Department of Education data shows the decline continues to hit North Iowa Cedar League schools as well.
    Certified enrollment at the 15 public NICL schools dropped 1.6 percent on the official count date of the 2014-15 school year from 11,671.8 a year ago to 11,489.6.

Wilma Cornelius

Wilma Elizabeth Cornelius, age 87, formerly of Parkersburg, died January 24, 2015, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center. Funeral services were held January 29at Reformed Church of Stout in Stout, Iowa, with Rev. Stephen Shaffer officiating.

Dorothy “Jean” Williams, 87 of Dike died January 23, 2015 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital of natural causes. Services were January 28 at Kearns Funeral Service Kimball Chapel. Burial was January 30 in Cape Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. School Foundation honors Heronimus

    The Grundy Center Community School District Friday unveiled a plaque in honor of former local attorney and philanthropist T.J. Heronimus, who passed away last August. Heronimus was a trustee for the Foundation from its inception in 1991 until his death.
    Superintendent Jerry Schutz presented the plaque to T.J.’s widow Marcia and son John. His son Jeff, who lives in Colorado, was unable to be at the presentation.

Supervisors approve law enforcement contract increase

    GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy County communities that receive law enforcement from the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department will see a rate increase for Fiscal Year 2016.
    The Grundy County Board of Supervisors approved an increase of 3 percent during Monday’s regular meeting. The increase will generate an additional $8,941 for the department.
    Sheriff Rick Penning presented both 3 and 4 percent proposals, but appeared satisfied with the lower of the two increases.
    “I think 3 percent will be adequate,” he said.
 

Spartans top Postvillle, falter in conference play

AMES – Grundy Center ended the week on a high note with a 64-45 win over Postville in an Iowa Showcase tournament game Saturday night, after suffering a pair of NICL West losses earlier in the week. The Spartans fell to South Hardin 69-60 and Hudson 69-52.  
Grundy Center (7-10 overall, 5-6 NICL West) has a light week this week, with just one game on Friday when they take on East Marshall at Le Grand.
